How could signing Lauri Makkanen impact these three San Antonio Spurs
With ample cap space to spare this summer, the San Antonio Spurs are projected to be key players in free agency. One name on the front burner is big man Lauri Markkanen, who is reportedly believed to be a prime target of the Silver and Black by executives around the league with a strong offer seemingly on deck.
The sweet shooting Finnish big, the 7th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, has been facing an inconsistent stretch in his development. Some of that inconsistency is owed to the instability in Chicago fueled by personnel changes and roster overlaps.
Markkanen will be a restricted free agent in the summer, with the Bulls able to match any offer on the table to retain him. However, after the acquisition of All-Star Nikola Vucevic, the stretch big may find himself outside of Chicago’s immediate and long-term plans.
The San Antonio Spurs’ interest may be legitimate, but signing Markkanen is easier said than done. Outside of financial decisions, which may include overpaying to try to pry him away from Windy City, there are questions about his potential fit in San Antonio as well.
Is there a clear way to fit Markkanen into the rotation without trimming opportunities for the existing players? Let us zoom in on three players who form intriguing fits next to the big man.
