Victor Wembanyama's duels with Giannis could showcase just how far he's come

Victor Wembanyama has held his own against some of the league's best players throughout his first few years, but there's one opponent who should be taped to his mirror like Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. He'll suit up against Giannis Antetokounmpo twice next season, giving him the chance to showcase his growth against a fellow unicorn.

While Wemby's battles against Giannis have historically been fun, we've gotten a pretty small sample size. The Bucks and the Spurs have played eight times since the 2022-23 season, with both players simultaneously being available in just four of those matchups.

That pales in comparison to Victor's games against some of his other rivals, like Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whom he's played seven and fifteen times, respectively.

So the basketball world is eager to see another volume of this epic clash of demigods. Not only will it be entertaining, but Wemby will have the perfect opportunity to put his skill set to the test against another top-five player.

Wemby has a lot to gain in his matchups against Giannis

Wemby and Giannis are 2-2 against each other, making for a compelling dynamic in next season's games. Will one of them come out on top with a series lead, or will it remain tied up after both meetings?

In their four previous matchups, Giannis has outdueled Victor. He's averaging 31.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. But that doesn't mean Wemby hasn't held his own. Throughout the series, he's put up 22.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, and an astonishing four blocks per game.

So Victor hasn't been out of place in his battles against Giannis, but there's still another level he can tap into when they face off. Luckily, with the lessons he learned from last season's playoff run, Wemby can make a monumental offensive leap that will help him outduel the Greek Freak.

Miami's defensive setup is also the perfect test of his growth as a scorer. They feature an elite interior defense with Giannis and Bam Adebayo, so Wemby can accomplish a few things if he wins these matchups. He can finally outduel Antetokounmpo while proving how far he's come against strong, physical defenders.

The similarities of these two makes this matchup so unique

Even though they attack the game differently, Wemby and Giannis have so much in common: they're the two most unique players in the league with their otherworldly skill sets and size. At 6'11, Giannis knows how to use his athleticism, strength, and unique ball-handling prowess to dominate the interior. He's also an extremely underrated playmaker.

At 7'4, Wemby's never afraid to put his own ball-handling skills to the test by attacking downhill or getting in rhythm to shoot over defenders. But the most glaring similarity is easily their defensive impact. They're both elite rim protectors with a DPOY award under their belt.

That's enough evidence to prove just how important their duels will be next season. No players define the pure absurdity of modern-day basketball quite like Victor Wembanyama and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Above all else, it gives the league's newest superstar a chance to show how far he's come.
