The biggest question surrounding the San Antonio Spurs this season is whether they've done enough to address the spacing issue around Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox. Brian Wright approached the offseason knowing that they had several areas that needed improvement, and focused most of the assets on adding size and playmaking, but the shooting question remains.
The Spurs' spacing plan is shaky
Right now, it feels like they're mostly counting on improvements from their own guys. Lindy Waters III likely won't play enough minutes to make a real impact, and the same goes for Carter Bryant, who recently expressed an understanding that he may spend time with the Austin Spurs this year. He's fine with it, though, because he knows that he'll get minutes to develop. But that doesn't help SA right now.
How much do we expect Kelly Olynyk to play? The 34-year-old vet averaged 20 minutes per game last season, but will he get that on a team with Victor Wembanyama and Luke Kornet ahead of him? And if so, how does that help the spacing on the floor when Vic is on it? I don't see him and KO playing many minutes together.
What I do know is Olynyk is making $13.4 million this year, and Kornet is making $11 million. Guerschon Yabusele has chemistry with Wembanyama already from their time on Team France, and he's only making $5.5 million in New York right now. With the taxes in the Big Apple, he'll bring home much less than that.
It seems unlikely that Yabusele would have been unwilling to come to San Antonio to play next to his countryman for more money. Especially since he knows how talented Vic is from firsthand experience.
Yabusele would have been the perfect fit
You'll have to forgive me. I've mentioned my displeasure with not signing the man who dunked on LeBron James in the finals of the Olympics before. With the season approaching, it's fair to go back and re-analyze the offseason, predicting what may or may not hurt the team this year, though.
I'm such a big fan of Guerschon's game. He brings so much energy and effort with a skill set that would have been perfect for San Antonio.
Nearly a month ago, he had a fiery quote that only made me long for his presence in a silver and black uniform more. Yabusele told Knicks fans what they could expect from him, and I can't imagine Spurs fans not wanting this guy.
"I can tell Knicks fans that my DNA is very suitable for them. I bring passion, sometimes also anger, war, and aggression." - Yabusele
No, seriously. He shoots the ball well, he rebounds, he brings fight and energy, and he drops bars like that one. We should have gotten that guy.
