HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reports that, according to league sources, the San Antonio Spurs are expected to show interest in Guerschon Yabusele. That's fantastic news to me, and Spurs Nation should all be excited if they add this player. Yabusele is an unrestricted free agent in search of his next NBA home. It's a good thing the 210 has been expanding rapidly, because there are plenty of places for him to live.
Yabusele is exactly who the Spurs need
SA needs to add to their frontcourt, and that's no secret. Last season, everyone hoped Zach Collins would finally get it together and prove he could reach his potential. That didn't happen, and to make matters worse, Charles Bassey was injured all year. Despite that, they wouldn't play Sandro Mamukelashvili very much, and even if they did, he isn't really the kind of backup center they need.
Yabusele is. You can put the ex-76er on the floor as the lone center in situational lineups, and he'll thrive in that role. He backed up Joel Embiid last season, but The Process ended up missing so much of the year that Guerschon ended up starting a bunch of games. He proved that he could hold his own.
The 6'8" Frenchman may be lacking height, but he's not lacking heart. He plays big, and we all saw it during Team France's run in the Summer Olympics that resulted in a silver medal. Whether it was his explosive poster on LeBron James or his big-time shotmaking, the former Celtic proved he can rise to the occasion when the stakes are high. That's what earned him a spot back in the league.
The Spurs are going to need that as they start seriously challenging for home-court advantage in the playoffs. This really doesn't have to be the slow burn that some think it will be. San Antonio can leapfrog a bunch of teams if they handle their offseason right, and Victor Wembanyama has the kind of year that he should based on who he projects to be.
The ex-Philly big shot 38% from three last season. We know the Silver and Black can certainly use that. But let's dive deeper into the numbers. Yabusele shot 39% from deep on catch-and-shoot opportunities. He had a reliable jumper, but he didn't fall in love with it to a detrimental degree, averaging a reasonable four attempts per game.
He attacked the rim, and did so ferociously, with 50 dunk attempts and 44 converted. But he also displayed touch around the rim, finishing 61% of his layups. Overall, the skilled tweener shot 71% in the paint. San Antonio often had dry spells that Yabusele could help them stop with his efficient scoring ability.
He's a good player, and the Silver and Black need to stockpile those right now. Free agency starts June 30. The Spurs can begin negotiations with available players at that time. Hopefully, the report from Scotto is on the money, and they go get him.
