We may not know what's going to happen with Gregg Popovich and the head coach position, but there is one thing that we do know. San Antonio's roster needs an upgrade. That's going to happen this offseason, and how it happens will determine how far the team can leap next year.
Victor Wembanyama has already proven himself to be who we think he is: a generational star. Those players work like madmen during the offseason to improve, so we don't have to worry about that. The focus is on how the rest of the team fits around him and how they can elevate each other.
To that effect, there are a couple of players who would be key to gathering Vic's brigade—big men he can either play with or who can be his substitute when he needs a breather. The Spurs should be able to get it done with relative ease, but first, they must clear some room.
Spurs should replace Bassey and Biyombo with Yabusele and Sorber
Most Spurs fans are on the same page about Charles Bassey. He's a nice guy, but his time has come to an end. He's not on the floor enough to justify his place on the roster for another season. Bismack Biyombo was on the team as a "break in case of emergency" option. He wasn't on a team before the Silver and Black picked him up. He did a fine job but, the Spurs can replace him.
The Philadelphia 76ers have decisions to make on their roster, and it's unlikely they'll be able to retain Quentin Grimes and Guerschon Yabusele. They traded for Grimes during the season, and he had several breakout games in Philly, so it's hard to believe they'll let him walk.
Yabusele will end up as the odd man out, and quite frankly, he's an unrestricted free agent. He may want out anyway. Their season went horribly, and a repeat performance is on the table when they're relying on the health of Joel Embiid.
San Antonio should jump at the opportunity to add Wembanyama's teammate from the French Olympic team. They would have instant chemistry and Yabusele can do a little bit of everything.
The other player the Spurs should bring in is Thomas Sorber from Georgetown. He's projected to land in the middle to the back half of the draft, and if Atlanta has success in the NBA Play-In Tournament, the draft pick they owe San Antonio will land in a spot where taking Sorber is the best option, and it's a great one to have.
Sorber is a happy player with great energy, good scoring ability, strong defensive instincts, and he's big—listed at 255 pounds. He's dropped in the draft due to an injury he suffered during his final college season, but that just means he's flying under the radar. San Antonio would knock their second pick out of the park by selecting him.
The Spurs have a laundry list of improvements to make, but they'll be in great shape if they ship out Bassey and Biyombo to bring in Yabusele and Sorber. It's the upgrade the team needs and the fans deserve.
