The dream of putting Guerschon Yabusele back together with Victor Wembanyama to create a French frontcourt is officially dead. The stretch four who made his grand return to the NBA last season has signed with the New York Knicks for two years at $12 million, and according to Michael Scotto, the Spurs weren't even in the final running for his services.
The finalists for Guerschon Yabusele came down to the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets, league sources told @hoopshype. Yabusele ultimately chose New York and departs from the Philadelphia 76ers. Sixers recently agreed to a two-year deal with Trendon Watford to replace Yabusele https://t.co/eiCBZyrJY4

Fans have been talking about potentially adding the versatile big man to the team ever since he shone next to Wemby in the Summer Olympics last year. Reports eventually surfaced within the last month indicating San Antonio and Yabusele's mutual interest, but actions speak louder than words. So now I'm questioning how much of that was actually true. At the very least, I question the seriousness.
San Antonio has been too quiet for fans
Luke Kornet was a fantastic addition, but the Spurs are currently moving like they're either still waiting for something big to drop into their lap or they still believe in the roster as currently constructed. I have a problem with both scenarios, as playing the waiting game can come back to bite you since you're relying on things out of your control to play out, then cleaning up from what's left.
Sometimes, you land that something great you were hoping for, but just as often, you end up holding an empty bag with nothing but crumbs. If it's the other scenario, and they're still holding out hope that the players they drafted will give them what they need, I'd advise caution just because it's rare that teams hit on every draft pick.
Maybe Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Malaki Branham, or Blake Wesley turn into great role players, but the chances are slim that every single one of them will. Trade some of them while their value is still tied to their potential.
The Spurs can go for a deep postseason run next season if they just decide to do it. Yabusele would have been great for that. Now, we just have to wait to see what unexpected move might come, and if it doesn't, we run the risk of being let down by underwhelming performances again.
No rulebook says that, because Victor is only 22 years old, he shouldn't be afforded a good team around him to make deep playoff runs. His progression as a player should be what determines how aggressive the organization is. There isn't a single top 15 athlete in the NBA who isn't trying to win right now. There's no reason for the Alien to be the exception.
