The San Antonio Spurs may have Victor Wembanyama back on the floor for Game 3, despite him suffering a concussion on Tuesday night. Wemby is already doing cardio work per ESPN's Shams Charania. He isn’t allowed to do on-court activities until 48 hours after he suffered the injury, but the door is open for him to play on Friday night in Portland. Shams said the following.

“I am told Victor Wembanyama was able to participate in cardio work late Wednesday because his symptoms didn’t worsen. He wasn’t feeling worse than he did when he suffered that concussion. He’s hopeful he will be able to travel with the team to Portland on Thursday, but whether he’s able to clear concussion protocol in time to play in Game 3 on Friday in Portland is an obvious question and in jeopardy for the Spurs.”

Shams noted there are protocols, including waiting 48 hours to participate in full activities. Wemby’s concussion isn’t worsening, which is a positive update. Charania was quick to note the Spurs will err on the side of caution, but fans will take the encouraging news when they get it.

Shams gives positive update, but no guarantee Victor Wembanyama plays

Fans took it as a positive sign that Wemby was at Keldon Johnson’s celebration for winning Sixth Man of the Year. That wasn’t all he did on Wednesday if Shams is right. The fact that the 7’4 big man got in some cardio was a positive first step in returning to play.

All Spurs fans can do is hope that things continue to improve. Wemby plans to travel to Portland on Thursday. San Antonio plays Game 3 on Friday and Game 4 on Sunday in Rip City. The average time missed with a concussion in the NBA is one week. Wemby still has several hurdles to clear before returning, but it seems like San Antonio got lucky on this one.

The Alien is unstoppable. The Spurs dominated Portland in Game 1 with their superstar and held the lead late in Game 2. They are the better team and can win without Wembanyama if they have to. The Spurs should be cautious with the future face of the NBA, but Wemby won’t want to take it slow. He’s trying to play in Game 3. Wembanyama is built for this and wants to shine in all the brightest moments.

Shams let the door open for several possibilities, and nobody knows what will happen. It is all about how Wemby responds to the protocols. He is already doing some exercise, which is a positive just 24 hours after suffering a scary injury. Let's hope he keeps making progress.

The San Antonio Spurs will continue to work with Victor Wembanyama to get him back on the floor. He is already improving, but everyone involved must follow the NBA’s concussion protocol. It was a positive first step. Hopefully, Wemby is back in Game 3. The Spurs need the victory to take back the lead in the series. Stay tuned for all the latest updates on Wemby as they become available.
