The NBA hasn't quite returned yet, but it's two lights down the street. The San Antonio Spurs, like the rest of the league, held their media day today, September 30. Coach Popovich was the first one to speak, and he had plenty to say, but the most shocking news came before Pop took to the podium in a training camp roster report.

If you open the link to reveal the full list and look closely, fans will notice a significant change in Victor Wembanyama's weight. Last season, he played at 210, but this year, he's listed at 235. A 25-pound weight increase over the offseason is way more than expected. Especially when you consider his statements saying he didn't want to bulk up too fast.

Wembanyama at 235 is enough to completely change matchups

Defenders will have a much more difficult time moving Wembanyama off his spots, and right now, that's the entire game plan for certain teams. If you can keep Wemby away from the basket and get physical with him, you stand a chance of disrupting his rhythm. That's going to be a much more difficult proposition now.

The biggest concern for Spurs fans is Wemby's health. He's a size that has a poor track record for long, healthy careers. He and his team are very aware of it and have been carefully crafting his workouts to maximize his career. Part of that strategy was to avoid putting on too much weight too fast.

This update is an indication that they've decided this is a safe weight for him at this stage of his career, so that's a reason to be optimistic. After the Paris Olympics, the Rookie of the Year was seen on a French television program, where he informed everyone that he had already added about 11 pounds of muscle.

That doesn't seem like it was that long ago. It's a testament to the focus and drive Wembanyama continues to display. His youth has never been a detriment to his determination. When he ended his first Olympics with a silver medal, he was clear about his feelings; it wasn't good enough.

He insisted everyone should worry about what's coming down the pipeline. But this update is about more than words because talk is just that; talk. Wembanyama is about action, so the league better get ready for a thriller.
