Victor Wembanyama had an amazing rookie campaign. There's not much you can ask from a player who won Rookie of the Year unanimously, but with any player, there are always ways to improve. Virtually every facet of his game can be polished, as the Spurs franchise player is far from a finished product. Those things take time and there's no doubt that he's working on them but it's nice to know that he's also addressing the one issue that has nothing to do with on-court reps.
Wembanyama confirmed he's added 11 pounds of muscle
In an interview with Brut, a French media channel, Wemby confirmed this. The revelation should be music to the ears of San Antonio Spurs fans worldwide. Victor played last season at about 210 pounds. 221 is a significant improvement. While still a far cry from Joel Embiid's 280, Wemby doesn't need to add a ton of weight to his frame. Too much weight on players that tall is a terrible idea that the NBA already has experience with. His name was Yao Ming, and his playing weight was 310 pounds.
Wembanyama has had a very specific training regimen for a long time. He and his team have been dialed into how to manage his body to ensure longevity. The strategy is to add strength without adding too much weight. Looking at him in the Olympics, you can tell it's all muscle and it will help him hold his ground and impose his will more in the NBA. Spurs fans everywhere get to look forward to more demonstrative highlights, as Wemby goes from destroying guys to obliterating them.
