It's game day for the San Antonio Spurs. The All-Star Break has concluded, so it's time to get back to the grind. There are 30 games left in the season, and guys are going back out for the Rodeo Road Trip. Their next two games are going to be in Austin at the Moody Center.
No doubt the crowd will be excited to see Kevin Durant face off against Victor Wembanyama, but fans will need to go into the game with their antennas up. The Spurs have listed their franchise center as questionable, citing an illness. The coaching staff will likely see how he feels at shootaround and either make a decision then or designate him a game-time decision.
Other than Wemby, there haven't been any changes to San Antonio's injury report. The Suns will be sending out a fairly healthy squad. Cody Martin is the only player who won't play. He suffered a sports hernia while he was still in Charlotte and has yet to make his debut for Phoenix. Martin was acquired at the trade deadline in a trade that sent Jusuf Nurkic to the Hornets.
Spurs-Suns game notes
Spurs fans have been familiar with Kevin Durant for a long time, going back to his days in Oklahoma City. He's bounced around a few times since then, but he's still the head of the snake—even in his advanced age (36). The two-time champ is averaging 27.3 points per game. He's not showing any signs of slowing down on the offensive end, quite literally, considering that's his career average.
The only difference in his output is his increased efficiency. Devin Booker is no slouch, either. The former Kentucky guard puts up 26.3 points per game. San Antonio has already had a taste of Booker's ruthlessness on the court this season. The star guard dropped 29 on the Spurs after getting hot in the second half, carving up SA's defense.
Bradley Beal has only averaged 17.4 points or fewer in four other seasons in his career, and they were all at the beginning. He's a 13-year vet with an ability to go from ice cold to blistering in a millisecond. He may not be having his best year, but it's due to the sacrifice he's making as the third option. He's still shooting the ball efficiently, and the Spurs must be careful not to let him get loose.
San Antonio lost the first matchup with this team, but they went 3-1 against them last season, and that was without De'Aaron Fox. It's a different year, but they're team is worse, and the Spurs have improved. It's just a matter of putting it all together again.
Phoenix is 11th in the West with a 26-28 record. The Silver and Black have no choice but to go on a run to end the season if they want to make the postseason. That needs to start tonight, so let's hope Wembanyama is feeling up to the challenge.
