The NBA has been shaken to its core with the revelation that Victor Wembanyama will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. This was first reported by Shams Charania after a separate report from Mike Finger confirmed that Wemby had not arrived to shoot around with the rest of the team ahead of their Austin game against Phoenix.

This injury has a scary history

The reported recovery time for this injury is about 2-3 months, but it could take longer. Brandon Ingram was diagnosed with the same injury when he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. DVT is a blood clot. It usually forms in the lower extremities, but for Wemby, like Ingram, it occurs in their shoulder. Ingram made a full recovery after 3-4 months.

Chris Bosh also suffered from this injury. The clot was in Bosh's leg and unfortunately ended the two-time champion's career. After his diagnosis, the Miami big man never played in the NBA again. One of the clots had traveled to his lungs, and the situation was too dangerous for him to return.

According to reports, it doesn't sound like the Spurs expect Wemby's situation to be as dire, saying the team expects it to be an isolated condition.

Victor Wembanyama was averaging 24.3 points per game, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks. His season ends as the frontrunner to win Defensive Player of the Year, but that will no longer be possible as he will not reach the 65-game threshold necessary to win the award.

San Antonio was attempting to make a push for the Play-In Tournament, but that will no longer be feasible. They were already behind the eight ball with a record of 23-29, and the teams in front of them won't be tanking, so it was going to be a dogfight to the finish.

Now the team will need to focus on chemistry between De'Aaron Fox and the rest of the young team, evaluating who will be there long-term and looking at the draft to see which lottery prospect will fit the best since that's where they're going to end up.

This season has been filled with adversity from the beginning. As much as the players and the fans have wanted to start the winning back up, the basketball gods have clearly determined that it's not our time.

From Coach Popovich's health scare to the constant injuries, and now this. A successful season was not in the cards for San Antonio this season, but the future is still bright. Let's just root for a full recovery for San Antonio's superstar, which should be the case.

That's great news for Wemby.
