Leading up to the 2025 NBA draft, there was some buzz that the San Antonio Spurs might try to pair Victor Wembanyama with another massive frontcourt player. But unfortunately for the Spurs, that dream officially ended when the Sacramento Kings ultimately drafted the 7-foot-1 Maxime Raynaud with the 38th overall pick in the second round of draft.
As we know, San Antonio's front office generally keeps their plans pretty close to the vest. It's not often you hear leaks about what the Spurs plan to do, and then it's what they ultimately end up doing as well. However, there were discussions that the team could look at Raynaud with their second round pick.
Of course, when the Spurs opted to trade their 38th overall pick, that dream went out the window. But even in hindsight, it's a fun concept to think about. Considering the size, rim protection and overall offensive skill set that Raynaud brings to the table, it was a very intriguing hypothetical scenario when you talk about pairing him with Wembanyama in the frontcourt.
Raynaud and Wemby would have been a formidable frontcourt
In theory, those two could have very possibly created the most physically imposing frontcourt in the NBA. San Antonio has of course already been building around Victor very intentionally. He's a generational talent, but he's still going to need a supporting cast that complements his skill set and maximizes the incredible versatility he brings to the floor. Part of that means lessening his workload and making it so he doesn't have to do everything all by himself.
Adding a second 7-footer that has a high feel for the game would have been the kind of forward-thinking move that could have really opened things up for Wemby in a hurry. Not to mention the fact that Raynaud is also a fellow Frenchman.
Obviously, that opportunity is now out the window. Give credit to Sacramento for seeing his value and taking a guy that will likely pay off for them in the future. And while it would have been nice to create another 'twin towers' duo in San Antonio, the Spurs' rebuild is still in a more than fine position, especially after Wednesday night.
