The 76ers just drafted Johni Broome in the second round, so that's basically that for Guerschon Yabusele. The French big man was only signed on a one-year deal, so he was a free agent anyway. But he played well, and there was uncertainty whether he'd return to Philly since he had such a productive season. That's pretty much out the window with the Broome selection, and now the path is clear for the Spurs.
San Antonio knocked their draft out of the park by selecting Dylan Harper with the number two overall pick and Carter Bryant with the 14th pick in the lottery. They needed more playmaking and badly needed a 3-and-D wing player, so there are no complaints there. But this team also needs more help in the frontcourt, and Yabusele should be at least one of the solutions to that problem.
Yabusele will fit with Spurs perfectly
Wembanyama's former teammate needs to become his new teammate. He's a smart player who knows how to play in the flow of the offense. You don't need to draw up plays for Yabusele, but he'll find his way onto the scoreboard anyway. He averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game last season. He also shot 38% from three, so the Spurs would be killing two bats with one Manu swipe.
Harrison Barnes was the best shooter on the team, and Julian Champagnie shot it alright, but that's not enough. The Bryant addition will help in that department. He shot 37% from deep. Still, San Antonio needs more. The last two NBA champions were deadly from the perimeter. It's the way the game has gone, whether we like it or not.
Victor Wembanyama will likely improve his shot just like he did from year one to year two. But he'll get to operate more on the inside with reliable shooters around him. It must all work together to give the Spurs a balanced attack. Yabusele can help bring that balance, and he should be at the top of Brian Wright's list once free agency begins on June 30.
