Spurs' unmistakably loud statement with Dylan Harper pick also sparks big question

That's only step one.

The Dylan Harper saga has officially begun in San Antonio. As expected, the Spurs took the Rutgers star guard with the second overall pick in the 2025 draft. This marks the third time the Silver and Black have had a selection in the top five of the lottery in as many years. Now, Harper joins Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle as the faces of San Antonio's bright future.

The 6'6" guard from New Jersey is the perfect mold for the NBA today. He's a big guard who can easily get to his spots on the floor, plays downhill, defends well, and orchestrates like Bach. However, orchestras have a lot of moving parts. They must all work together seamlessly, and this roster needs work before that can happen.

When Harper, Fox, and Castle kick that ball out to the perimeter, someone needs to cash in, and it can't be Harrison Barnes every time. The Spurs need shooters, and they can still get them.

Spurs can still make a draft, sign, or trade for a shooter

If San Antonio keeps their 14th pick, most people expect them to take a big man based on recent reports saying that's the position they've been looking at. It makes sense when you consider they were rumored to be interested in Kristaps Porzingis before he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, but they were also linked to Thomas Sorber and Khaman Maluach rumors.

They could zig when everyone thinks they'll zag—something they've been known to do—and draft Liam McNeeley from UConn. McNeeley was forced to play out of position for much of the year, but he still showed a lot of skill and potential. He's one of the best shooters in the draft, and he has the size to handle the physical toll playing wing in the NBA demands.

Another option is making a trade. That could be done with the 14th pick for a player like Cam Johnson because we know the Nets are trying to move up in the draft, or it could be other assets for someone we don't expect right now. Nobody thought Desmond Bane was about to get moved until he was, so these things happen.

Of course, we still have free agency to consider as well. Guerschon Yabusele and Ty Jerome are a couple of unrestricted free agents I have my eye on. The Spurs are expected to have interest in Yabusele, per Michael Scotto. Considering his relationship with Victor Wembanyama, hopefully, that one is in the bag. Whatever they decide, I expect the Silver and Black to address such an important issue.
