Wembanyama as NBA 2K's cover athlete guarantees a bad time for many

Victor Wembanyama was announced as the cover athlete for the new NBA 2K27 video game that's set to release in September. San Antonio's superstar is as worthy of a choice as there is right now after the dominating run he just went on in his third season in the league.

Wemby averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks, then won the NBA's first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year award. As the upcoming face of the league, he was the perfect pick. The downside is the experience players will have when forced to play against the digital extraterrestrial.

Wembanyama is going to absolutely dominate every game

Spurs Nation will be fine. As fans of the team and player, they'll no doubt be the ones playing with Wemby, reaping the benefits of his fakeness. But I've been playing these games for over a decade, and as long as I can remember, the cover athlete is always boosted to an almost unfair degree.

From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in last year's iteration to Kevin Garnett in 2K9 (2009), the player chosen to represent the game was the easiest to use and most difficult to stop. Whether fair or not, those are the breaks when you turn on an NBA 2K video game.

In the current version, Wemby is already rated 97 out of a possible score of 99. He's one of the top players, making him tough enough to deal with as it is. I can only imagine what he's going to be like in the new iteration.

The problem is Wembanyama already feels like a created player

Lest I remind everyone, a 7'4" athlete who can block everything and shoot threes was a created player archetype often banned among friend groups. It was just too unfair. There were even years when the game itself limited the kind of tools you could apply to one player because it wasn't considered "realistic."

Wembanyama has already broken all of those rules simply by existing. Now he's going to get Batman-level plot armor. You won't be able to run by him; he'll cover the entire floor defensively, he'll make every jump shot, and he'll posterize every defender.

You'll feel exactly as you did when you sat down for a game at your friend's house and pulled out his 99-rated All-NBA center who could score like Michael Jordan and defend like Hakeem Olajuwon. On the other hand, that's kind of what Wemby is like in real life when he's all the way turned up.

However, in NBA 2K27, he'll be turned up 24/7. It's going to be hilarious.
