Victor Wembanyama is close to an accomplishment few NBA legends ever reached

The basketball world is waiting impatiently to see what Victor Wembanyama has in store for his fourth year after an amazing 2025-2026 run. There is one massive accomplishment on the horizon: he has a chance to become one of the few players in league history to ever win MVP and a championship in the same season.

That list is filled to the brim with all-time legends, such as Michael Jordan, Stephen Curry, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, and many more. So if Wemby's able to accomplish this feat, he'd enter the same territory as some of the greatest players ever to touch a basketball at such an early stage in his career.

Wemby will be 23 next summer. There are only a few players on that list who were that young when they won an MVP and a championship in the same season, so this is just further proof of how ahead of schedule Victor is.

Victor's so close to his first MVP award

There's a ton of reason to be confident that Wemby will take home the 2027 MVP trophy. He came close last season, ending third in voting behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. Combine that with some deep postseason experience, and he seems primed to make a leap that will be impossible for voters to ignore.

Nobody impacts the game on both ends quite like Victor. He's the NBA's premier rim-protector who also dominates offensively, averaging 25 points per game on 51% shooting in his third season. Even still, he has so much to improve upon. He needs to get better at finding his spots as a scorer and can also raise his defensive game to another level.

Last season, Wemby's game was not nearly as polished as other stars such as SGA, Jokic, Luka Doncic, and even Jalen Brunson. Yet despite that, he stamped himself as a top-three player in the league. So just imagine what would happen if he makes those improvements in his fourth year. Barring injuries, an MVP run for him seems inevitable at this point.

The Spurs' championship window is wide open

Obviously, the second part of Wemby adding himself to that exclusive list of legends is winning an NBA championship. The Spurs put themselves in position this summer to do so, adding several talented players to the mix.

On top of their new signings, they have what most teams in the NBA don't, which is a young yet experienced core. San Antonio has a bevy of 25-and-under talent that have already shown they can compete on the biggest stage. It's such a rarity to have players who can go head-to-head with the best in the league well before they've even reached their primes.

The Spurs have everything they need to secure a championship in 2027; now it's about execution. Can they take what they learned from their recent playoff experience and use it as fuel to get better? That's the biggest question right now, but I have more than enough faith they'll do so.

So for Wemby, an MVP award and a championship win in the same season isn't easy to do; that's why very few have accomplished that. But luckily, he has all the tools that he needs to make it happen.
