With the offseason festivities officially behind us, the Spurs walked out feeling great. Adding Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in the NBA draft, signing Luke Kornet, and trading for Kelly Olynyk, the Spurs had their fair share of excellent moves. However, there is one last thing that needs to happen for the Spurs to be the ultimate champions of the offseason.
There isn't a rookie, free agent, or splash trade that can affect the final step to the Spurs' perfect offseason. To truly take over the NBA and head into next year as a bona fide playoff team, the Spurs' face of the franchise will need to endure a transformation into his complete form.
A Wembanyama jump would outdo everything
Victor Wembanyama has already made the case for being among the best in the NBA, but at only 21 years old, there is so much room to grow. While he has already made an All-Star team, Wembanyama has the potential to grow even further.
If the Spurs want to compete for titles, they need Wembanyama to become the All-NBA talent he is capable of being. The NBA is a star-driven league, and to win an NBA title, you need a top-of-the-league talent manning the ship.
Every champion this decade has been led by a future Hall-of-Famer. While landing complimentary players in the draft and free agency is essential, having a player capable of taking over a series and leading a band of men is the most critical factor.
The Spurs are lucky enough to have a cocooning superstar ready to explode onto the scene; we just need to see it happen. If Wembanyama can make the next jump into superstardom this season, the extra moves around the edges will be brushed aside.
What does a Wembanyama upgrade look like?
Obviously, we would all love to see Wembanyama leap into stardom, but what exactly does that mean? The Frenchman can't walk his way into MVP status; it will take deep refining of his game. That starts on the offense side of the ball.
If there was anything to knock on Wembanyama's offensive strategy, it would be his over-reliance on the three-point shot. Although it is jaw-dropping watching the 7'4" alien drain threes over All-Defensive caliber players, it is not exactly the most efficient scheme.
Oftentimes possessions are wasted by Wembanyama chucking threes that he doesn't need to. These empty possessions could be filled by a glance at the basket, which uses his massive frame to his advantage. With a few extra looks toward the rim, Wembanyama can tack on an additional 4-5 points per game.
With an even diet of electric deep shots and efficient strides toward the rim, Wembanyama can be a consistent offensive dynamo every single night. Combining his otherworldly shooting with an extra emphasis on finishing plays at the rim will take Wembanyama over the top.
None of what happens in the Spurs front office will matter if Wembanyama becomes an MVP candidate. Everything runs through the big man, and if he can level up heading into next season, the Spurs will be on track for unimaginable destinations.
