I like the sound of that. "He changes the geometry of basketball... He completely changes the way you have to look at basketball." Those were Sam Vecenie's words about Victor Wembanyama on a recent episode of his Game Theory podcast with Bryce Simon. It's hard not to agree, and we got another taste of what Sam was talking about during the Spurs' preseason opener.
Vic finished that game with three blocks in the first half, and as impressive as they all looked, they were also routine for The Alien. He's 7'4" with an 8'0" wingspan, but if that were all he had, he would just be a taller Javale McGee. He also has great timing, awareness, and a fantastic motor that drives him to go after just about every shot he can get his hands on.
I can guarantee you that the first things most coaches discuss with their teams before playing against San Antonio is how to deal with Wemby's defense. His offense is hard to stop, too. Sometimes, you just have to pray he misses, but you have to actively plan your offensive attack around staying away from this guy, even when he's not the one defending you.
Wembanyama is a larger version of Kawhi Leonard
I don't mean this to be a comparison of styles; it's about how they make you feel when you watch them defend. Back when Leonard was in his defensive prime, literally winning DPOY in back-to-back seasons, it was hilarious to see guys try to score on him. The way he'd rip the ball away from the other team was straight-up comedy.
And I have to say "from the other team" because he wouldn't just do it to his man. He could be the help guy, but if the player with the ball came too close to him, there was a very real chance The Klaw was coming away with. The best word I can think of to describe how it made me feel is gleeful. Those are the same emotions I get watching The Alien reach the sky for blocks or pin attempts off the glass.
These players shut off entire sections of the floor. Vic is a human "do not enter" sign, and when guys choose to be stubborn, they end up on his highlight reel while we all laugh at them. We should all be thankful for the levity. A good laugh and good hoops make for a great time. I look forward to a lot more of it this season.
