Tobias Harris could help Victor Wembanyama make a major offensive breakthrough

Last season, Victor Wembanyama began working on getting to the middle of the floor more. Starting his possessions from that range gives him endless options to break a defense. He didn't do it enough, though, and nobody other than Devin Vassell took advantage of that area. As a whole, San Antonio is looking to change that.

Tobias Harris gives the Spurs a new weapon in the middle of the floor

In comes Tobias Harris. He thrives in the mid-range, so Spurs fans will see plenty of action in that spot now. SA's new recruit has lived in that area for his entire career. Whether capitalizing on pick-and-pops, post-ups, or just reacting off the catch, the 13-year veteran forward knows how to exploit the middle.

With him in the lineup, defenses have to concern themselves with defending the entire floor, not just the three-point line and the paint. However, the ex-Pistons forward's arrival doesn't remove the responsibility from Wembanyama's shoulders.

San Antonio's franchise star would still be wise to improve his game from the free-throw line, whether he's in the center or either elbow. Mastering the middle of the floor will be a major step in becoming the unstoppable force we know he's capable of becoming.

So much can happen from that spot. Wemby can punish drop coverage; it opens short-roll opportunities to pick apart defenses, and it opens up easier passing lanes. The ability to play out of the middle of the floor keeps defenses honest because every option on the entire floor is available to the orchestrator.

Wembanyama can become unstoppable by growing this part of his game

Long-time Spurs fans who watched prime Tim Duncan—and even gracefully aging Timmy D—know the damage that can be done from the elbows. Those who don't go back far enough can just think about Nikola Jokic. The offensive Serbian savant will completely dismantle coverages from that area.

Part of the game within any game against The Joker is trying to keep him away from those spots while Denver designs creative schemes to get him in place. Usually, the latter wins. He's too big, too smart, and the Nuggets are too committed to exploiting opponents via their superstar's strengths.

The Silver and Black must do the same. Wembanyama has already proven himself to be a more than serviceable facilitator. With a reliable jump shot and quick decision-making, he becomes deadlier than ever.

Once he catches the ball there, Vic has the skill set to drive, find cutters, throw lobs, attack slower centers, shoot over smaller defenders, back guys down, or kick to shooters. For every problem the defense creates, Wemby would have an answer. So far, he's only scratching the surface of what he can become from that area.

Tobias Harris should immediately raise the Spurs' efficiency from the middle of the floor. He'll take advantage of the opportunities San Antonio didn't cash in on last season. However, if his presence also accelerates Wembanyama's growth there, the signing gets even better.
