3 Overlooked Spurs poised to shatter expectations next season

Every season, there are a few players who outperform what anyone expected. For the Spurs, that list may be longer than most realize. Between Victor Wembanyama's gravity, an improved roster, and more defined roles, several players are walking into ideal situations to have career years.

These three stand out the most.

Tobias Harris is walking into the easiest job of his career

Harris has played with stars before, but he's never played next to a collection of talent this strong offensively. I'm not going to disrespect former MVP Joel Embiid and act like he didn't have incredible gravity. Wemby's may be stronger, but not so much that it could be the sole reason for Tobi's great upcoming season, but when you factor in the ball handlers, it adds a different dynamic.

Stephon Castle's playmaking, De'Aaron Fox's collapsing defenses, and Dylan Harper's downhill pressure make this experience more unique for Tobias. He's certainly able to create his own offense, but he won't have to as much. They'll create those looks for him. All he'll have to do is get to his spots and make the shots.

His experience should allow him to feast on open looks, smart cuts, and mismatches created by the numerous threats on this roster. Sometimes, the veteran who isn't asked to do too much becomes one of the most efficient players on the floor. Harris could be that vet.

Devin Vassell will be defenses' forgotten problem

Vassell will benefit from the same thing Harris will—the attention brought on by the core four. Only as a starter, he gets the benefit of playing alongside Castle and Wembanyama more, and both players stand to take another leap this year. That leaves Vassell operating with less pressure than he's ever had.

Dev showed Spurs Nation what he was capable of in the playoffs. He can build on that next season by taking advantage of the open looks he'll be getting. Talented players with chemistry make for a dangerous mix, and San Antonio is growing together.

Their ability to play off each other will be better than ever, and that's an area where someone with Vassell's skill set can thrive. He gets to read and react to his teammates, knowing what their tendencies are. Knowing when to cut or slide into the right spots to be available as an outlet will be much easier. Cashing in on it all should set Dev up for a hell of a year.

Don't sleep on Tarris Reed Jr.

Most late-round picks struggle to find their opportunities, but that won't be the case for Reed. He'll get some run immediately. With Jayden Quaintance expected to miss the start of the season, there will be some backup minutes available to split with Luke Kornet. Mitch Johnson will also at least try to see if the ex-UConn standout can play next to Vic.

It will be up to Tarris to take advantage of these opportunities. The Spurs had a lot of things last season, but they needed more size, rebounding, and physicality in their frontcourt. Reed brings those things to the table along with a strong motor and a willingness to embrace whatever role is needed of him.

That attitude could earn him Coach Johnson's respect faster than people expect. He won't need to score 15 points a night to exceed expectations. He just needs to consistently do the dirty work and prove he belongs in the rotation via his effort.

For the Spurs to win a title, they can't just rely on their stars. They'll need role players to step up. Fortunately, Mitch has more than a few capable ones at his disposal. If Harris, Vassell, and Reed all take advantage of their situations, this rotation will undeniably be the deepest and most reliable in the NBA.
