The Tobias Harris signing is awesome for the Spurs for several reasons. First and foremost, he’s a winner, and he has the type of experience and veteran wisdom this team needs more of to get over the hump. He’s also a smooth fit on the court for this roster as a true forward, a position San Antonio was thin on, who can space the floor.
With Harris’ sharp off-ball scoring instincts, strong defensive presence, and knack for hitting tough pull-up jumpers, he’s going to be an excellent complement to Victor Wembanyama. The Alien should be excited to play with him next season— they’re going to make each other better.
Tobias Harris is a beautiful fit next to Victor Wembanyama
Think of all of Victor Wembanyama’s superpowers offensively. He can take other bigs off the dribble and drive or create his own shot. He’s close to unstoppable with position deep in the paint. He’s also an all-world passer for a center.
All those skills will allow Wemby to build real chemistry with Harris. On most possessions, Harris will be spotting up while Wemby cooks. The newest Spur will be one of the team's top shooting threats immediately, so his presence will give the Frenchman more room to operate.
If Wemby draws a double inside the arc, Harris is a shrewd cutter, so he’ll be ready to capitalize on the All-Star’s gravity and move his way into some chippies.
How much self-creation Wemby should truly be doing has been a topic of conversation at times. The proper balance for him there is unclear, but if he needs a break from putting in bag work next year, Harris can take over.
He doesn’t have a stocked cabinet of counters to shake defenders, but the pull-up middie has always been his fastball. The 33-year-old was a reliable release valve for the Pistons and will be the same for the Spurs.
Harris will make the already dominant Frenchman even better
As for the defensive end, the Spurs have established that they want Wemby to be a roamer. They rarely assign him to bang with tough fours and fives on a possession-by-possession basis.
At times, that has caused issues for San Antonio, because they haven’t had the right matchups for whoever Wemby wasn’t guarding. Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell aren’t strong enough to contain any burly forwards, let alone bigs, that Wemby isn’t assigned to.
Harris isn’t anything more than a slightly above-average defender at this point in his career, but his best trait on that end is using his filled-out frame to absorb contact and wall up against physical drivers.
Say, hypothetically, the Spurs match up with the Knicks in the Finals again next year. Instead of guarding Karl-Anthony Towns, Wemby could stick to Josh Hart and let Tobi take on KAT. It wouldn’t be perfect, but Harris would make Towns earn his drives, and if New York’s star center did get to the rim, Wemby would be there to meet him.
All in all, not only is Tobias Harris the right fit for San Antonio in general, he’s also the right fit for Victor Wembanyama. Harris is going to amplify Wemby on both sides of the ball. That should terrify the rest of the league.
