It's all about the fit this offseason.

As NBA free agency ramps up, the Spurs must prioritize targeting players who can make an impact without taking touches from Victor Wembanyama. Dean Wade and Rui Hachimura are the best options, as they add value to San Antonio's offense while giving him the space he needs to grow as a scorer.

The Spurs already have a plethora of shot-creating options. Victor is at the top of the totem pole, while De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Devin Vassell fill out the rest. They shouldn't further complicate their offense by adding more players who demand a heavy amount of touches.

They need to insert the right complementary pieces that enhance the Spurs' scoring attack without disrupting their plans to develop Wemby's offense. Wade's and Hachimura's names have been in the rumor mill, and their offensive skill sets make life easier for Victor.

Wade and Hachimura give Wemby what he needs on offense

There are a handful of things that I believe a team's number-one option must have. Of those, one is additional shot creation, and the other is floor spacing. The Spurs already have plenty of additional shot creation, so they don't need to worry about adding more people in that department. However, it wouldn't hurt to bring in another long-range shooter.

Wemby is trying to grow into a better one-on-one player, and the best thing San Antonio can do to help is to give him as much spacing as possible. He'll need enough real estate to read and react to his primary defender and enough options to throw the ball to if he's being double-teamed.

Wade and Hachimura are perfect for this, as they're both serviceable beyond the arc. Hachimura is one of the NBA's best three-point snipers, making 44% of his shots from distance last season. Wade isn't as dangerous, but defenses will have to respect him, as he converted on at least 36% of his threes every year since the 2023-24 campaign.

They're perfect targets because they can open the floor for Victor while strengthening the Spurs' overall three-point attack, which was pretty mediocre last season.

Which player makes the most sense for San Antonio?

While both players could add to the Spurs' offense without compromising Wemby's touches, the front office can only reasonably sign one. Hachimura is undoubtedly the more expensive option at this point, so looking towards Dean Wade makes more sense financially.

Not only would Wade be cheaper to bring in, but he also offers a bit more than just floor spacing. He's a far superior defender to Rui with a knack for guarding multiple positions. That's perfect for a Spurs defense that switched a lot last season.

Regardless of who they target and sign, the most important thing this offseason is fit. They already have the talent necessary to win a championship. San Antonio's front office must add players who can operate in a supporting role and bring out the best in their stars.
