The Spurs and Victor Wembanyama share an embarrassing streak that must end

Now that the Spurs are back on top of their game, there aren't many teams that can claim to have their number. But one does exist: the Cleveland Cavaliers. San Antonio has lost to the Cavs in seven straight meetings. That adds a unique layer to the story between these two franchises because it makes them the only team Victor Wembanyama has never defeated.

December 15 should be circled on everyone's calendar. This is a wrong that needs to be corrected immediately. It's just weird. Wemby and the Spurs have begun their dominant era. There can't be some random squad that just beats them all the time. Especially one with championship aspirations.

Cleveland is the one team Wembanyama can't seem to beat

There's a non-zero chance of meeting the Cavaliers in the Finals one day. As the Knicks just showed everyone, all it takes is a few key injuries to other contenders to clear your path. So, eliminating any potential psychological advantage should be a priority.

Now, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year hasn't been in the lineup for every game between them, but that doesn't change the egregiousness of the stat. San Antonio has lost by double digits in two of the three clashes he played against them over the years—including once on December 29, 2025.

Last season, the Spurs proved their ability to find their way to wins whether the Alien was playing or not. They were blown out in both meetings with Cleveland—one with Vic and one without. With all that said, Wemby isn't the only one who should be zeroed in on that game.

The Spurs need to break Cleveland's hold

The last time the Silver and Black walked off the floor as the victor after a Cavs game was during the 2022-2023 campaign, and they only beat them once that year. In fact, the Spurs are 1-10 vs. Cleveland in their last 11 games, making them a complete outlier.

Denver has the next-highest winning streak against San Antonio at three games. Wemby only played in one of those, and the Nuggets needed overtime to make that happen. Nobody else can boast a hold of any kind over the new cool kids in South Texas.

December 15 will be their first opportunity to erase Cleveland's grip on them. Of course, it wouldn't erase the seven losses in a row, so it wouldn't completely remove the stink it caused. It'd be a start, though. A second chance presents itself on April 7. However, let's hope the Spurs are slapping two wins over the Cavs together instead of still fighting for control of their series.
