Even if San Antonio Spurs fans had a crystal ball, they probably couldn't have foreseen just how great this team would be this season. Victor Wembanyama has obviously played a giant role in their success, and he finally has a strong supporting cast, including a co-star.
Although De'Aaron Fox was brought in to be Wembanyama's co-star, that hasn't actually been the case thus far. Sure, he's the Spurs' second-leading scorer, but most agree that Stephon Castle has been the Scottie Pippen to Wemby's Michael Jordan.
Fox is definitely more of a traditional second option in the sense that he is a more reliable scorer. Nevertheless, Castle does all of the little things that win games.
Stephon Castle is the Wembanyama co-star the Spurs have waiting for
Castle's been an elite defensive player this season, giving San Antonio a perimeter stopper to put on the opposing team's best guard or wing. That makes life easier for Wembanyama, who is tasked with being the second line of defense and challenging shots at the rim.
Fox isn't a bad defender, but Castle is simply better and more versatile. As a passer, Castle is the better of the two guards, at least when it comes to feeding Wemby.
Having a co-star consistently get the best player easy shots is incredibly valuable, and Castle has been the best on the team at finding Wembanyama for alley-oops. It wasn't that long ago that his teammates struggled with getting him the ball, but that has been a different story this season thanks to Castle.
Stephon Castle is a do-it-all Wembanyama co-star
Beyond giving Wembanyama a lockdown perimeter defender and someone who can find him for easy shots, Castle is a burgeoning offensive player. His shot has come a long way, with him drilling 43% of his mid-range jumpers and nailing 40.2% of his threes over his last 30 games.
That was a major swing skill, and his jumper is starting to come around. Combine that with his ability to finish at the rim and get to the free throw line and he could easily emerge as a 20-point per game scorer next season. That would only solidify his status as Wemby's co-star.
Wembanyama has already stated his belief that Castle should have gone first overall in the 2024 NBA. He's right; Castle is clearly the best player of his draft class, and Wembanyama is no doubt happy that he fell to the Spurs.
If Castle continues to develop at a rapid rate, he could quickly emerge as an all-star and form one of the best one-two punches in the league alongside Wembanyama. However, as is, he is already the perfect co-star to Wemby.
