It's no secret that San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle is a subpar three-point shooter. He buried just 28.5 percent of his attempts in 2024-25 and though he's improved in 2025-26, is still at a lackluster mark of 31.1 percent.

Against all odds, Castle has caught fire and turned in a red-hot March, shooting 40.0 percent from beyond the arc on 3.9 attempts per game.

Castle has already played nine games in March, which offers an encouraging sample size of success. Though it's not quite enough to confirm he's made a lasting improvement, it's on pace to be the best shooting month of his NBA career thus far.

More importantly: Castle is well on his way to improving his three-point field goal percentage for a fourth consecutive month in 2025-26.

Castle shot an abysmal 17.2 percent from distance in November, but followed by shooting 29.2 percent in December. That's by no means ideal, but he again increased the figure by converting 32.0 percent in January and 34.6 percent in February.

With a steady stream of improved shooting numbers established, perhaps Castle's leap to elite isn't quite as sudden as it seems.

Castle has flashed elite potential in multiple phases of the game, including his defense, playmaking, and scoring within the three-point line. He's already arguably elite on defense and is averaging 7.0 assists and a team-high 13.1 drives per contest—both of which rank in the top 20 in the NBA.

The missing ingredient has been his shooting, which is the one area in which skeptics are convinced Castle will struggle come the postseason and thus force San Antonio to play 4-on-5.

Thankfully, Castle is finding the proverbial secret sauce at the perfect time of year. He's not only burying shots at a high percentage, but has turned in his best shooting performances of the month against fellow contenders San Antonio could meet in the playoffs.

That includes a 3-of-4 performance from beyond the arc during a blowout win over the Houston Rockets, a 3-of-8 showing in a win over the Boston Celtics, and a 4-of-8 outing during his 30-point triple-double against the Denver Nuggets.

This has all coincided with Castle averaging 8.1 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game in March. There have been inefficient shooting performances, as well, but the baseline appears to be rising, as Castle has shot at least 33.3 percent from distance in six of his nine performances—progress compared to his season mark of 31.1.

Though it may not be likely that Castle will shoot 40.0 percent for the rest of the season, the fact that this is a fourth consecutive month in which improvement has been made is a promising sign.
