The San Antonio Spurs are in a unique position. With one of the most unique and talented players in the association on their roster in Victor Wembanyama, they have both a blessing and a curse. The blessing being that they will have the chance to achieve some special things from a team perspective given they utilize his talent in conjuncture with the rest of their roster properly. The flip side being the they will risk wasting a massive opportunity if they do not.
This is why roster construction is so important. Of course, just having a player like Wemby gives you a chance to win games on pretty much any given night. But long term and in the grand scheme of things, surrounding him with players that amplify his talent will be of the utmost importance to the Spurs' front office. As San Antonio goes through the current season, certain things are becoming clearer about what the needs of this team are.
Matt Moore of Action Network recently posted some intriguing statistics relevant to the Spurs. According to the data, San Antonio currently employs the player who attempts the fourth-most catch-and-shoot three-point shots this season: Julian Champagnie.
The Spurs need an elite catch-and-shoot player
This would seem like a positive at first. Having an offensive system that can generate consistent looks like this for a specific player is definitely a strength, but the problem lies in the shooting numbers. Of the top five players in this category, Champagnie is shooting the lowest percentage at just 36.7%.
It is also worth noting that the other four players in the top five are all considered much stronger pure shooters than Julian. This makes it even more interesting that Champagnie ranks so high in this category, but more importantly, it also points to likely the Spurs' biggest roster need right now. Clearly, San Antonio needs to plug a more deadly shooter into Julian's position.
This may be their top priority at the February trade deadline. We can imagine what it would look like if a dead-eye shooter like a Malik Beasley was in Champagnie's shoes, getting the ball in places where he can take a lot of open or at least semi-open shots. It would likely lead to a lot more points ultimately going up on the board for the Spurs, and efficiently, too.
Again, the Spurs have to capitalize on the talent of Wembanyama. Getting a strong three-and-D player who can reliably knock down shots from deep would clearly be the perfect compliment to Wemby right now.
