If you look back just a year ago, Spurs fandom was not exactly ecstatic. The team was nowhere near a playoff appearance, and despite a talented band, there were no results to get excited about. Fast forward 365 days, and now the Spurs are looking like one of—if not the best—teams in the NBA. How could this possibly happen?
There are dozens of stats and analytics we could talk about, but instead, I want to give this monumental Spurs turnaround the admiration it deserves. The way San Antonio has flipped things around in just a year's time is historic. Even the biggest NBA nerds can't quite debunk this mystery. We will need greater help.
The Spurs have blown their preseason projections out of the water
Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, DraftKings projected the Spurs' win total at a measly 43.5. They have already demolished this benchmark.
By the end of the year, there's a solid chance the squad beats this by more than 15 wins. And to think that some people out there put their own money on the Silver and Black going under.
While the Spurs' win total projection was obviously a mistake, most still didn't believe the team would be this good. I don't recall many analysts predicting that this team would be battling the Thunder for the top seed in the Western Conference and the best overall record in the NBA. It is downright shocking.
In the Wild West, I personally didn't predict this Spurs team would go this far. I thought in a best-case scenario, they would be fighting for the third or fourth seed. Boy, was I wrong.
The Spurs roster has developed perfectly
Typically, in any given season, you project serious growth from only one or two players. On a normal timeline, it is extremely difficult to expect more than a few players to step up drastically in a single season. It's simply not realistic. Well, the Spurs have broken the idea of realism.
You could say with validity that every relevant Spur has taken a step up this season. Aside from some low-level bench players, the bulk of the Spurs' core has looked better than in their previous form. While their levels and areas of growth differ, I can confidently say that everybody has improved.
Whether it's the stars at the top making big leaps or previous afterthoughts making a name for themselves, the growth has spread throughout the roster. I am not sure if it is excellent coaching or some spell that has been cast on this team, but something has gone extremely well.
From the roster to the coaching staff and front office, everybody deserves a boatload of credit for what has happened this season. Like a March Madness Cinderella, all of the pieces have fallen perfectly in place, and they feel like a team destined to break barriers.
