There is no denying that this Spurs team is ready to win a championship. I could pull out dozens of stats to prove they are among the best the league has to offer. But what is so incredible is the road that the front office took to get here. San Antonio built this exceptional squad from the ground up and shaped it all together in a shocking way.

Even more unfathomable, the Spurs crafted this potential dynasty in plain view of everybody across the NBA. Nobody was prepared for what San Antonio would become, and now they are going to pay for it. General managers across the association will be kicking themselves for allowing the Silver and Black to pull this off.

The Spurs got lucky but avoided blunders

You may say that the Spurs got extremely lucky, and frankly, they did. By the luck of the NBA gods, San Antonio found themselves at the top of three consecutive drafts and were put in a position to bring in some future Hall of Famers. However, you have to give them credit for nailing these picks.

There are several examples of front offices across the league fumbling excellent opportunities at the top of the draft. Just because you get a top pick doesn't mean you are guaranteed a star. The Spurs, meanwhile, excelled in every opportunity they got.

San Antonio was built through the draft

To kick it off, the Spurs made the easy decision to draft Victor Wembanyama. This, among any of the moves, was the simplest decision, but San Antonio capitalized. From there, general manager Brian Wright leveraged their opportunity to build around the Alien and allowed the team to stay among the bottom.

In 2024, in a draft considered weak, the Spurs made perhaps the best pick, selecting Stephon Castle at pick four. Castle has proven to be one of, if not the greatest, players in this class and, in retrospect, should have gone first overall.

In 2025, the Spurs hit yet another home run. Dylan Harper is poised to be a top NBA point guard in the near future, while Carter Bryant is coming along perfectly. The Bryant pick, in particular, was a massive steal and will pay dividends in the future.

Prior to drafting these franchise cornerstones, the front office proved its keen eye for talent with earlier selections of Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson in the later parts of drafts. When you dive into the current San Antonio roster, it is full of homegrown talent.

The Spurs rounded out the roster through nimble deals

To cap off a roster full of drafted players, the Spurs front office has rounded the edges perfectly through the trade market and low-budget additions.

In a move that solidified the Spurs' ability to contend, the team acquired De'Aaron Fox for a minuscule price that drew little attention. While everyone was focused on the Luka Doncic trade, San Antonio added the final infinity stone and hardly gave up anything.

In the theme of acquiring players for nothing, Brian Wright nabbed both Harrison Barnes and Julian Champagnie for the price of absolutely nothing. Now, these players are fundamental to the Spurs' success.

Brian Wright and the front office deserve a massive round of applause for the job they have done constructing this roster. While they made some easy decisions, they also slammed some incredibly difficult ones, and it is paying off in a big way.
