Spurs’ Taelon Peter signing could throw unexpected wrench in the depth chart

In the wake of the NBA Draft and free agency, it felt like the Spurs were likely done tweaking their roster ahead of the 2026-27 season. But today, they agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with Taelon Peter, meaning more moves could be on the horizon.

Peter will go to training camp with San Antonio, and he has enough juice to potentially earn himself a two-way deal. This signing adds some spice to what would have otherwise been a boring rest of the offseason for Silver and Black faithful.

Taelon Peter is a solid prospect worth a look for the Spurs

Peter, who played his college hoops at Liberty, was drafted 54th overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2025. He spent his rookie year on a two-way but was afforded more playing time than most guys of his status due to Indiana’s slew of injuries.

The 6’3” shooting guard was OK as a freshman, probably a little worse than the Pacers were hoping for. In 12.9 minutes per game across 38 appearances, he averaged 4.5 points, 1.1 assists, and 0.7 steals on 38/33/62 shooting splits. This summer, he got caught in a roster crunch and was ultimately cut so Indy could retain Jalen Slawson.

Despite his underwhelming debut campaign, there’s still a lot to be intrigued by with Peter. He’s an active, disruptive defender who racked up 1.8 steals and 2.8 deflections per 75 possessions, which ranked in the 87th and 66th percentiles, respectively, according to BBall-Index.

Offensively, he’s an uber-versatile connector who can cut, finish above the rim, and make the extra pass. He’s at his best when his shot is falling, of course. He didn’t have much luck from deep in his first NBA season, but his college and G League numbers suggest he’s at least respectable from outside.

Peter could force the Spurs to make another roster change this fall

Peter’s skill set lends itself well to the modern NBA, and it also fits the way the Spurs want to play. It’s easy to picture him sharing the floor with Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle, complementing them as an off-ball weapon.

He will need to develop to reach rotation player level. Luckily, though, San Antonio excels at cultivating their two-way guys.

The Spurs have a nice group of two-way players currently. David Jones Garcia, Maliq Brown, and Ja’Kobi Gillespie all have the upside to become contributors. But now, their spots on the team could be in jeopardy.

If Taelon Peter shows out in the preseason, San Antonio could be forced to keep him around longer. Keep an eye on how the fringes of this roster shape up in the fall.
