San Antonio’s 2026 rookie class has some seriously intriguing potential. Jayden Quaintance, Tarris Reed Jr., and Ja’Kobi Gillespie all could become rotation pieces or better for the Spurs. None of those three guys, however, embodies the classic fan favorite archetype more than Maliq Brown. Brown does all of the little things a team needs to win, and the Silver and Black faithful are going to love him for it.
Maliq Brown is a classic fan favorite type of player
Brown built his NBA draft resume by being what you could call a little things king. At Duke, his counting stats were relatively paltry. He posted just 4.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game as a senior. But he was still one of the most important and most beloved players on that team because his impact went way beyond the counting stats.
As a combo big who can comfortably slide in at the four or the five, Brown has impressive defensive versatility. He can execute any scheme at a high level, and he’s insanely disruptive. As a senior, he amassed 1.8 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. His efforts earned him the 2025-26 ACC Defensive Player of the Year award.
That DPOY becomes even more remarkable when you consider he won it in a bench role. That’s certainly not something you see at the NBA level. It only took 20.3 minutes per game for Brown to make his mark as an incredible defender. It’s almost needless to say he won ACC Sixth Man of the Year last season as well.
On top of his defense, Brown also contributes as a rebounder, connective passer, and play finisher. His game isn’t flashy, but he gets it done. His ability to get busy and put a stamp on a game regardless of how many minutes he plays is exactly what will make him a fan favorite once he steps on an NBA floor.
Spurs fans will be clamoring for Brown to get more minutes next season
To start his career, San Antonio likely won’t have much of a role for Brown. As a two-way player, he’s buried in what’s quickly become a crowded frontcourt in Alamo City. The Spurs also haven’t prioritized their two-way guys very strongly over the past couple of years, making things even muddier for him.
But when Brown does get a chance to play, garbage time or otherwise, he’ll be ready to prove his worth. He’s not the type of guy who ever takes plays off or gives half effort. Time and score don’t exist to him. Odds are, it won’t take more than one or two stifling blocks or hustle rebounds from Brown for Spurs fans to latch onto him.
Eventually, Brown could become a legitimate role player for San Antonio during their contender era. Even if he doesn’t get there, it’s a guarantee that he’ll capture the hearts of fans along the way.
