Just under a month after losing in the NBA Finals, the Spurs have been busy throughout the offseason, getting active in the draft and free-agency market. Their rookie center, Tarris Reed Jr., will drastically exceed his first-year expectations, as he's one of the few rookies in his class who's prepared to make an impact for a contender.
Reed was selected with the 26th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of UConn, where he led the Huskies to a deep tournament run. While they lost in the championship round to a stacked Michigan Wolverine squad, it was very apparent that the young big man is built for the next level.
He's more than ready to contribute to winning in the NBA, which is perfect for the Spurs as they're focused on bringing home a championship next season. It's not easy to find rookies who possess the skills and mindset to thrive in a win-now environment, but Reed is a part of that rare bunch who do.
Reed could immediately address the Spurs' interior issues
This summer, the Spurs were tasked with addressing their depth problems at center. And they did just that by drafting Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed. Combine them with Luke Kornet, and that's three solid options to fall back on when Wemby has to go to the bench.
But there are still some issues. For one, Quaintance's role with the team in his first year seems uncertain, given his extensive injury history. Additionally, Kornet already showed that he lacks the athleticism and physicality to dominate inside on the playoff stage. He may have great regular-season moments, but how much will that translate over into the postseason?
By the time the playoffs roll around, Reed could very well be the Spurs' most reliable backup center option, and with the right minutes, he can thrive in that role. He's a big physical player who can compete on the boards and provide some strong interior defense. His numbers may not pop off the charts, but his impact will be huge for a team trying to win a championship.
Tarris Reed Jr. has the perfect mentality for a contender
Tarris Reed Jr. has already made it apparent that he's ready to come in and embrace his role for San Antonio, giving them exactly what they need inside. And this isn't just coming from the analysts; he fully understands what he needs to bring to the table for this franchise.
It's not just the fact that he has the basketball skills to fill a need for San Antonio. He possesses the mindset to carry it out on the court consistently, and you can attribute that to his experience at UConn. Similar to Stephon Castle, he learned how to accept and play in a winning role under Dan Hurley, and that's going to be a huge difference-maker for him in year one.
Will Tarris Reed Jr. put up the same numbers in his rookie season as other big-name draftees? Probably not. But he will still make a serious impact on his team. Spurs fans should brace themselves to see yet another first-year player contribute at a high level for them on the biggest stage.
