The Spurs have reportedly expressed interest in New Orleans' feisty guard Jose Alvarado, but apparently, he doesn't want to leave the Pelicans. As strange of a preference as that may be, I'm thrilled by that decision.
San Antonio has plenty of needs, but an undersized guard with a Scrappy Doo vibe isn't one of them. He doesn't shoot the ball that well (36% 3PT) and never really has. He's an energy guy. We have those.
This is one of those moves that would have greatly irritated the fan base if they were able to pull it off. Spurs Nation is begging for more shooting and for the team to play with more physicality. Adding Alvarado wouldn't help either of those issues. He may bring an aggressive style of play on the defense end, but that's not where the Spurs have most of their problems.
The Spurs need offensive help and Alvarado doesn't provide that
I'd like to think I speak for the majority of the fan base when I say that we're tired of seeing players who can kind of, sort of shoot sometimes. The Silver and Black are in need of a serious upgrade from the perimeter. They need the kind of threat that shows up in red on scouting reports because if you leave him open, he's almost guaranteed to drop 8 threes on your head.
I know it's not easy to find those guys, but let's start by prioritizing them and being willing to give up a few extra assets to make it happen. That's the biggest thing this team is really missing. I actually think they can get by without adding another frontcourt player at the deadline, and once they make it to the offseason, Victor Wembanyama is going to get back to his body sculpting regimen.
Remember, Wemby has been clear from the beginning about his plan to add strength gradually. This year has been a huge improvement in that area, as he's had a few offseasons to execute his vision. He's not going to go overboard in one summer, but Vic knows he must get stronger to impose his will to the fullest extent of his capabilities.
When the Spurs can roll out a stronger Wemby with Luke Kornet backing him up, they'll truly be fine in that area. Another big man would solely provide depth in case of an emergency.
Shooters are non-negotiable, though. They should be targeting one or two now, and they should continue to look at how they can attack that weakness in the offseason unless they think Carter Bryant will take a leap. I just don't see how the 6'0" Alvarado would help when they already have a great defense and plenty of ball handlers. No, thank you.
