Spurs have painfully obvious player to avoid signing to fill roster a spot

We've already done the Charles Bassey dance.

Shout out to good intentions because I know that's what Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors had when he suggested the Spurs re-sign Charles Bassey, but that should be a firm "no" from the organization. San Antonio still has an open roster spot, and it's likely they'll fill it before the start of the season, because why wouldn't they?

There are still a bunch of interesting players available on the open market, and depth can never be taken for granted. Rick Carlisle made that clear recently when he discussed how their is to basically come at their opponent in waves. Instead of trying to build a top-heavy team with a Big 3 and a lackluster cast, you're better off getting a bunch of good players and ensuring they all play hard for the entire game.

As Adams mentioned, Bassey provided solid production for the Spurs when he was on the floor, but that was the problem. He didn't play enough. He was always injured.

The Spurs would be crazy to re-sign Bassey

Unfortunately for the Nigerian big man, it seems the rest of the league feels similarly. He's only 24 years old, but he's unsigned, and if recent rumors are to be believed, he'll be heading overseas to play in a European league. Maybe he takes a similar route to Guerschon Yabusele. If he performs well and consistently enough, he could earn his way back to the NBA, but right now, there doesn't seem to be any interest.

That's not necessarily his fault, as no player wants to be injured. But that doesn't change the reality that he always was. Charles wore silver and black for three seasons. He played in 35, 19, and 36 games. He's just not reliable right now, and it would be insane to do the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.

He had injury issues in college at Western Kentucky, he lost time at the end of his rookie year with Philly, and he's had issues every year he was in a Spurs uniform. Now is the time to move on and wish him well.

I would rather re-sign Bismack Biyombo to that final roster spot. At least we know that he'll be there if called upon. But San Antonio fans would really go crazy if they were to convince Al Horford to come to the Alamo City. It's a long shot, but nothing is impossible. We never thought Dallas would trade Luka Doncic, and look how that turned out.
