Spurs have slightest chance to steal Al Horford from Golden State Warriors

Might as well make an offer.

There are still quite a few interesting players available on the free agent market. Al Horford is one of them, and the San Antonio Spurs still have an open roster spot. Reportedly, he's waiting for the Golden State Warriors to resolve their ongoing dispute with Jonathan Kuminga before making a deal with the former Boston champion, but the process continues to be delayed.

The Warriors just can't seem to come to terms with Kuminga on what his value is, especially because he wants to leave. Either way, potential money is tied up in the unknown with that situation, and until it's resolved, Horford remains a bystander. But there's only a month before teams report for training camp, so I can't help but wonder if the ex-Celtic is getting impatient.

Jake Fischer recently mentioned that a mystery team is lurking. I find it interesting that he didn't reveal the name of said team. We usually hear about which franchises are looking to make moves when the rumor mill is churning. However, the Silver and Black are known for being low-key about their decisions. Could it be them? It's hard to say, but we should hope so.

Spurs should inquire about Horford's services

San Antonio would be a great landing spot for Horford. He's a 39-year-old veteran with recent championship experience, and he's still a stellar defender who can knock down shots from the outside. He had a dip in his three-point efficiency last year to 36% from the previous two years, where he shot over 40%, but that's nothing to worry about.

He's extremely savvy and plays the game with heightened intelligence, never making the wrong play on either side of the ball. The former Atlanta Hawk center is still good enough to start, too, so there's the rub. He'll be able to get into the opening unit in Golden State. That team also has championship aspirations, so that's a favorable situation for him.

He likely wouldn't start in San Antonio, but he's an upgrade over Kelly Olynyk. KO shot the ball better last season, but he didn't play as much, and he's not the defender that Al is. Defense is too important to this franchise to toss that fact by the wayside.

With Luke Kornet on the roster, Horford would already have someone there that he's familiar with since both players spent the last few years together in Boston. The Spurs roster should also make him comfortable, as the 18-year vet is from the Dominican Republic. San Antonio's always been famous for housing several players from overseas.

Victor Wembanyama and Jeremy Sochan could bond with him over their worldly experience. But their time on the court together would be fantastic. He'd give them another skilled and reliable vet to lean on. There's much that a versatile big man like Horford could teach a supremely skilled Wemby. Even if it were just a one-year deal, and who knows? If they put the right pieces in place, they could be a contender this year.
