The San Antonio Spurs appear to be all but done making offseason moves after having failed to address a big criticism. Now, they will likely focus on internal development.
San Antonio did well to address several glaring issues, including upgrading their center rotation as well as adding depth at power forward. However, perhaps most surprisingly, the Spurs have doubled down on relying on youth as opposed to experience.
The Spurs added four players to their roster via the NBA Draft, including two first-round selections. Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. will replace Kelly Olynyk, Bismack Biyombo, and Mason Plumlee, proving the Spurs aren't scared to get younger.
The Spurs have gotten much younger, despite age concerns
Despite concerns about their lack of experience, San Antonio has made a conscious decision to get younger. Even after adding 15-year NBA veteran Tobias Harris, San Antonio still boasts one of the youngest teams in the NBA.
Adding an 18-year-old and a 22-year-old to the mix and replacing three veterans who are at least 33 years old or older is definitely a choice. Then again, Olynyk, Biyombo, and Plumlee were unplayable in the postseason.
Therefore, San Antonio can't simply rely on experience alone. Reed Jr. does have more than 100 college games of experience under his belt and is one of the older rookies in his draft class. He may not be an instant rotation player, but he could play 15 to 20 minutes a game as needed.
The Spurs are right to double down on their youth
After making it all the way to the NBA Finals, San Antonio shouldn't be looking to upset the apple cart. Especially with several young players expected to have big jumps next season.
Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper could each make a huge jump, helping San Antonio take a big leap forward. Even if they hadn't addressed their issues this summer, the Spurs would probably still be much better next season.
That is the beauty of having such a young team. No matter what, they are all but certain to dramatically improve.
Of course, San Antonio had unprecedented success last season. Moreover, their offseason moves to upgrade at center and bring in another power forward should only boost their championship aspirations.
