After selecting four players in the 2026 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs have officially signed each to contracts. Unsurprisingly, first-round picks Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. were signed to standard rookie-scale contracts.
Meanwhile, second-round selections Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown each signed two-way deals. Those two-way deals are notable for a couple of reasons.
One is that it leaves open two roster spots. Given that San Antonio is near the luxury tax, it suggests they won't be willing to go into the tax this season. The second is that it means that David Jones-Garcia will either be signed to a standard contract or be released.
The San Antonio Spurs roster is almost complete
The Spurs currently have all three two-way spots accounted for with the signings of Gillespie and Brown. However, what they'll do with the last two roster spots is up in the air.
It seems unlikely that they will fill both roster spots given how close they are to the tax line. Generally speaking, the Spurs often leave one spot open.
Then again, they could use a fourth guard. Perhaps that isn't seen as a pressing issue with Gillespie having plenty of college experience and Jones-Garcia having shown a lot before his injury.
Or, perhaps the Spurs plan on having De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper each play 30+ minutes. In that case, they would eat up all of the point guard and shooting guard minutes.
The Spurs are unlikely to make a big move ahead of the season
If I had to make an educated guess, the Spurs will re-sign Jones-Garcia to a minimum contract. With just $4.6 million below the luxury tax, they probably wouldn't sign another player to fill the last spot.
Or, they could sign a veteran to the minimum but also be unable to fill the 15th spot. Between those two options, the former seems more likely. If that is the case, then the Spurs' roster is pretty much complete.
All things considered, San Antonio did everything it needed to do this offseason. They retooled their frontcourt, getting rid of Kelly Olynyk, Bismack Biyombo, and Mason Plumlee, while adding Quaintance, Reed Jr., and Tobias Harris. Great offseason so far.
