It should be a great game.

The Spurs will look for their sixth straight win in a rematch against the Mavericks on Wednesday night. They beat their North Texas rivals 122-106 last week, but Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving were sidelined. Neither one of them showed up on the Mavs' injury report, but they had plenty of other names on it. As for San Antonio, nothing has changed on the availability front.

Spurs-Mavericks is about to bring ESPN fireworks

Dallas hasn't beaten the Silver and Black since March 12, 2025. That was in the 2024-25 season. That's six straight Ls courtesy of the Spurs. It's one of their longest-running losing streaks, with the others being six to the Timberwolves and eight to the Bucks, of all teams. Motivation to break that hold will be high.

Cooper Flagg played in all four games between these two teams in his rookie season, and in their last meeting, the former Duke star dropped 33 points. He was almost unstoppable. Unfortunately for them, Victor Wembanyama was also on one that night, so he poured in 40 points and added 13 rebounds, one steal, and two blocks. The Spurs won by 19 (139-120).

However, last season, the Flagg bearers didn't have Kyrie Irving in the lineup. The ball-handling magician is back this year, and he's as dangerous as ever. Through five games, the former Cavaliers champion is averaging 21.4 points on 52.7% FG and 39% 3PT. Coop is putting up 25.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists on 48.6 % FG.

To add some extra fire to their motivation, the Mavs are also coming off a loss to the Kings. Prior to that, Dallas defeated the Rockets in an NBA Cup match. A low like losing to Sacramento on the heels of an exciting win over an interstate rival is eye-opening for a growing team. Sure, Irving is there, but as a group, they're learning what it takes to win consistently in the NBA.

It's a familiar path. The Spurs went through the same things in Wemby's second season. SA only won 34 games that season, but they were rarely an easy out. Once they started to figure out what closing looked like, it became harder to knock them off. That's the stage Flagg's Mavericks are in now, and if San Antonio isn't careful, Dallas will walk out of the Frost Bank Center with a win.

Personally, I'd prefer to keep the winning streak over them going for as long as possible. I'm pretty sure the rest of Spurs Nation is with me on that.
