Just a handful of games into his sophomore season, San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper has a chance to do something that Cooper Flagg won't. Harper was taken second in the 2025 NBA Draft behind Flagg and has been someone overlooked in comparison despite him playing on a better team.
However, that may soon change. Now that he is starting and playing more than 30 minutes per game, he could potentially make both the all-star team and help lead the Spurs to a championship this season.
Flagg will certainly be in the mix to make the all-star team, especially with all of the injuries in the Western Conference. Despite that, the Dallas Mavericks likely won't sniff the playoffs, let alone the NBA Finals.
Dylan Harper can accomplish something Cooper Flagg can’t in 2027
We have already seen Harper on the biggest stage, and he's shown he can ball out. Against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, Harper averaged 18 points and 6.4 rebounds per game despite coming off the bench.
For a 20-year-old to play at such a high level in the NBA Finals only goes to show his talent level. Of course, if Flagg were in a similar situation, he would no doubt thrive.
However, Harper has the fortune of being on a great team and is crucial to San Antonio championship hopes this season. If he can help the Spur get back to the NBA Finals and win it all this season, it would help to shift the scale in Harper's favor.
Dylan Harper is crucial to the Spurs' championship hopes this season
It's ironic that the Spurs were nearly in position to pick Flagg only for them to come up just short in the NBA draft lottery. Meanwhile, Harper was seen as the consolation prize of the 2025 NBA Draft, but he's quickly proving to be an elite prospect.
To Flagg's credit, he is off to a monster start to the season, while Harper is finally getting a chance to show what he can do as a starter. It's going to be interesting to see how these two players develop over the course of their careers.
Flagg could be the face of the Mavericks for the next decade as well as one of the faces of the NBA. Harper may not become the face of the NBA, let alone the Spurs. Even so, he has the potential to be a multi-time all-star and an all-NBA player. Hopefully he can add a championship to that hypothetical resume by helping the Spurs win it all the season.
