The NBA has been taken over by LeBron James fever. For a while, it was Giannis Antetokounmpo who was dominating the headlines, but now, it’s a 41-year-old James, who is looking for his next team. According to a recent rumor, the Spurs have had some sort of conversation about bringing James to town, which likely puts two teams – the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder – in a very specific category.
During a recent episode of The Hoop Collective, it was stated that James’ agent, Rich Paul, told Windhorst that 27 NBA teams have inquired about signing James. And if the Spurs are reportedly one of them, then only two teams make sense as the two that haven’t reached out: The Knicks and the Thunder.
Obviously, the Los Angeles Lakers are out, which brings the number to 29 possible suitors, but only 27 have supposedly reached out. It’s probably the Knicks and Thunder.
Spurs' interest may mean Knicks, Thunder don't want LeBron James
At first glance, the Spurs seem like they could have been one of the teams that did not reach out to Paul about signing James. They have an elite young core and may prefer to build around it without a guy like James.
As for the Thunder, they have been building around their core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren for years. That group won them a title, and they haven’t changed much about it, especially with how expensive their roster is.
Lastly, there’s the New York Knicks. The reigning champions. New York is already getting very expensive, and that’s even with Jalen Brunson’s pay cut. Having just won a title, shaking things up by adding James may not be on their radar.
So, which two teams have actually not inquired? Well, Windhorst says that the Spurs have reportedly held some dialogue with James’ camp about bringing him to San Antonio, even if it wasn’t a full-blown pitch.
If that’s the case, then the Spurs would almost undoubtedly be included in the 27 teams mentioned. So, that leaves two likely candidates as the ones that haven’t reached out.
The reigning champs probably won’t want to mess up the chemistry on their roster, and the Thunder don’t really seem like a team that would be itching to bring James on board.
By process of elimination, the Spurs may have pigeonholed the Knicks and Thunder into a very small category of teams that haven’t reached out about James. At least, that would make sense.
