LeBron may not see Spurs answer staring him in the face until it's too late

It sure sounds like San Antonio is the ideal team for him.

At a live taping of "The Shop" on Friday, LeBron James talked about what he's looking for in his next team. He mentioned competing at a high level and being with an organization that is "practicing championship habits every day." There just so happens to be a squad out there that perfectly aligns with those things, and it's, of course, the San Antonio Spurs.

Based on everything reported over the past three weeks, it doesn't seem like the Spurs are at the top of his list with the Cavaliers, Warriors, Heat, Sixers, and Timberwolves (in no particular order).

That could be more due to San Antonio, though. On the latest episode of the "Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective" podcast, the insider said that the team had "some sort of dialogue" with James' camp (Rich Paul), but that he doesn't know if it was actually a "full pitch."

Then again, if that was the case, it could be because LeBron indicated he wasn't seriously considering the Spurs.

Regardless of how those talks went down, it'd be in James' best interest if he went to San Antonio, and it'd be a mutually beneficial relationship.

Spurs are the team that LeBron James is looking for

We know that James wants to be somewhere he can win a championship, and that finances won't be the driving force behind his decision. His happiness will.

What could make him happier than playing alongside Victor Wembanyama on a young Spurs team that made a run to the 2026 NBA Finals, defeating Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder on the way?

Return to Cleveland for a third time, where he can try to help a roster that isn't built to win a title, well, win a title? Or go to Miami to play with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo on a team that lacks the depth to make a championship run? Or finally team up with Steph Curry in the NBA on an aging roster? Or go to Philadelphia, banking on Joel Embiid to stay healthy?

None of those stops can give LeBron what San Antonio can. The Spurs are one of the best, if not the best, organizations in the league. Championship habits are at the core of who they are.

Out of all the players in the league, James understands that, or at least he should. Just before he was drafted in 2003, San Antonio won its second championship, and after that, added three more. Let's not talk about 2013, though he could help right that wrong.

There isn't a better team out there for LeBron than the Spurs. Signing with San Antonio wouldn't have the same effect as signing with, say, Cleveland or Miami, two teams he has history with, but the basketball would be better.

What more could he ask for?
