That was not Victor Wembanyama at his absolute best, and that should be terrifying for everyone for several reasons. The biggest being that he just showed the world that he can play 40 minutes if the team needs him to, and he'll put up monster numbers regardless of how it looks. That makes the Spurs a much more dangerous team than observers realize.
Wemby wants to hoop. He always wants to be out there on the floor with his teammates. He told the media how excited he was to get back on the court after last season's blood clot took him out of the game for months. Last night, San Antonio let the man play, and his presence was needed to pull out the win against a very talented Miami team.
There has been a steady progression in what the organization has allowed the Alien to do. He's been held back more than a handful of times in favor of caution. We've just never seen someone his size pull off feats like he can, so they want to take it easy. It's understandable. But now the restrictions have subsided, and now the league has a real problem on their hands.
Wembanyama's lackluster games prove he's MVP material
The future GOAT dropped 27 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, dished six assists, and had five blocks. At the end of the night, you felt like you didn't see everything he had to offer. His jump shot wasn't going in against the Heat, and it made them feel like they played great defense, when really, he was just missing. That's the benefit of being 7'45" tall. You can just see and shoot over the top of defenders.
I don't want to completely take away from what the Heat brought to the table. They played good defense all night and held the Spurs to their lowest point total of the season, but I'd be lying if I didn't at least acknowledge the number of makeable shots that Wemby and some of the other guys missed. Dylan Harper, for example, missed a few layups that he can make in his sleep. It happens.
But at the end of the day, Vic stayed aggressive, and his extended presence on the floor helped keep what had been the highest-scoring offense in the league to their season low.
When Luke Kornet is back and the Spurs have their full complement of players to deploy, playing that many minutes shouldn't be necessary for the franchise star. But knowing Wemby can play nearly the whole game and produce like that is reassuring for fans, and he likely feels the same.
