The Sacramento Kings are slowly gifting the San Antonio Spurs one of their best assets, and it could vastly improve their future around Victor Wembanyama. The Kings have been a disaster this season. They are one of the worst teams in the NBA and seem destined to enter a rebuild. Yet they consistently refuse to hit the reset button.

But that’s perfect for the Spurs. The longer the Kings avoid the reality of their situation, the better their future draft picks will be, and the Spurs own a pick swap with the Kings in 2031. Based on the current trajectory Sacramento is on, that could be a very valuable pick.

That helps the Spurs out a ton.

Kings pick swap in 2031 could be amazing for the Spurs

Currently, the Kings are 7-23 on the season. That’s a winning percentage of .233, which is the third-worst in the entire NBA (and dead last in the Western Conference).

Obviously, they lost a big piece last year to the Spurs when De’Aaron Fox requested a trade, and they were pretty much forced to trade him to San Antonio.

But now, with their new core of Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan, and new head coach Doug Christie, things aren’t going too well. Selling off their assets and starting a new rebuild may be their best course of action.

The 2030-31 season is far away. Five years away, in fact. But again, the longer the Kings wait to begin their much-needed rebuild, the better their 2031 will seemingly be.

And if the Kings aren’t a playoff team, or even fighting to be one, by 2031, then the pick swap San Antonio owns will be one of the more valuable assets around the league. (Barring a massive Nique Clifford or Maxime Rayaud jump or some incredible drafting, that seems relatively likely.)

Perhaps the Spurs would choose to keep the pick and add another talented young player to their core, surrounding Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper with even more young talent.

But maybe, if the Spurs haven’t won a championship yet by then, they could use the pick as an asset in a trade, landing Wembanyama another co-star to play with.

No matter what way the situation is spun, the Kings’ current spiral toward the bottom of the NBA totem pole is great news for the Spurs and their future with Wembanyama at the helm.

Sacramento is avoiding the inevitable right now, and it looks like that will set the Spurs up for a very fun decision once 2031 rolls around (or sooner, if they wanted to trade the pick).
