Spurs fans might riot (in joy) if Flagg and Wemby become teammates

The odds being what they are, the Spurs' chances of nabbing the number one overall pick for the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg are small. But, there's a popular phrase stemming from esteemed actor Jim Carrey in his very prestigious role as Lloyd Christmas in a cinematic masterpiece you may remember called Dumb and Dumber: "So, you're saying there's a chance?"

San Antonio will go into next month's NBA Draft Lottery with two selections, one at the expense of the Atlanta Hawks. Their odds of landing the top pick are 6.7%. Specifically, their eighth pick has a 6% chance of hitting number one, and the 14th pick has a 0.7% chance.

Those aren't the best odds, but until we know for sure, anything is possible, and if it were to become a reality, the Spurs would run the league for the foreseeable future.

Wembanyama and Flagg would be the best two-way combo in the NBA

Right now, when you think about superstar combos in the league, there are plenty to choose from. LeBron James and Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, to name a few, but all of these combos have one player or both players who are only stars on one side of the ball.

Bron, Luka, Maxey, Curry, Jokic, and Murray are all serviceable defenders, but none of them are making any All-Defensive Teams. There used to be a time when James would be on that team. He's already been selected six times. However, that time has passed him by, and even though he makes a great play every now and then, he also plays the part of a traffic cone at other times.

Victor Wembanyama is anything but a poor defender, and he's already turning into a star offensive player. All he has to do is be on the floor, and the team's defensive rating skyrockets as opponents cower away from any attempt at a layup when he's around. His impact is already that of a top-10 player, and he's only going into year three. It's scary hours from here on out for the Alien.

When you look at Cooper Flagg's scouting report, he's rated anywhere from an eight to ten in every measurement listed except one, where he rated at a seven—his ball handling. The 12 categories listed are athleticism, size, defense, strength, quickness, leadership, jump shot, NBA ready, ball handling, potential, passing, and intangibles.

You don't have to watch him play long to see that these ratings are on the money. Flagg is a dynamic prospect who has the potential to be a 25-point-per-game scorer, but he hangs his hat on defense first, and he pays attention to the details because he wants to win. Cooper has a reputation as a team player, and that fits San Antonio's culture.

He and Wembanyama would be unstoppable and impenetrable before long. Again, it's not very likely that the ping-pong balls bounce San Antonio's way, but there's a chance, and maybe it's destiny, and who can fight destiny?
