Dream Cooper Flagg Victor Wembanyama scenario takes unfortunate hit

That's not ideal.

The NBA has conducted all coin flips for tied teams ahead of the draft lottery, so all places have been finalized before the event on Monday, May 12. The Spurs were already solidified in the 8th spot, but the Hawks' pick needed clarity due to their tie with Sacramento. Unfortunately for San Antonio, the Kings won that coin flip, awarding them the 13th spot and ATL the 14th.

Another piece of the puzzle for the crucially important upcoming draft has been set in place, and now the wait for the night of the NBA Draft Lottery begins. Last year, the Spurs received the number four overall pick and added Stephon Castle to the roster. Two years ago, the basketball gods saw fit to award SA the number one pick, which came with Victor Wembanyama.

This draft doesn't have a Wembanyama, but it has a Cooper Flagg and several other prospects sure to carve out awesome careers for themselves. San Antonio has a chance to add two talented players to the roster, and that will still be true if the balls don't roll their way May 12, but there's a real chance they do.

Spurs' chance of landing a number one pick is a long shot

The ultimate prize is still Cooper Flagg, but we have to be realistic about San Antonio's chances of landing that pick. They aren't great. The added pick could very well be the additional help the Silver and Black need to get into the top four, though. As described in the graph above, that outcome has a better chance of coming to fruition.

When you look at history, as Paul Garcia so kindly did for us, teams that land at the 14th spot in the draft usually stay there. That's what happened to every team that landed in that spot over the past six seasons. The likelihood that ATL's pick nets the Spurs the number one overall selection is almost non-existent.

The number eight pick has a better chance, but honestly, I don't think it's going to happen. NBA fans everywhere may rise up against the league if San Antonio gets Cooper Flagg to pair with Victor Wembanyama. You would start seeing all types of crazy predictions predicting how dominant that duo would be.

Would 10 championships be on the board? Probably not, but someone would say it. The hyperbole is enough to emphasize how scary that would be for the league. Fortunately, there are a ton of great prospects in the draft, so no matter where they land, the Spurs will have tons of options. Then, maybe whoever they pick can help Vic and the franchise win another five rings—10 is a little lofty, anyway.
