The San Antonio Spurs have championship aspirations after going 62-20 during the 2025-26 regular season. Unfortunately, whether San Antonio loses in the first round, wins a title, or experiences any result in between, a crucial personnel loss could prove inevitable.
Per a recent report, Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney is reportedly viewed as the clear-cut best available option to become a first-time sideline leader in 2026-27.
Sweeney has become one of the most essential figures in the Spurs organization over the past year or so. He's effectively Mitch Johnson's second in command, which is a position he's secured by spending more than a decade on NBA sidelines.
According to Eric Nehm and Fred Katz of The Athletic, Sweeney is currently viewed as the No. 1 potential first-time head coach on the NBA's coaching carousel.
“He’s the top available (first-time NBA head coach) by a wide margin,” one Eastern Conference scout told The Athletic.
Losing Sweeney would be a devastating blow to the Spurs' coaching staff, but it's just a matter of time before he finally has his name called for a leading gig.
Sean Sweeney will be a top target for potential head coaching vacancies
Sweeney received his first assistant coaching job in 2013-14 with the Brooklyn Nets. He went on to spend four seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, three with the Detroit Pistons, and another four with the Dallas Mavericks before landing his current job with the Spurs in 2025.
Sweeney thus has a unique combination of general NBA coaching experience and a history of success in a leadership role for teams with star players.
That not only includes veteran talents like De'Aaron Fox, but the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama fairly early in their respective careers. That experience could prove intriguing to teams with stars they're hoping to develop or elevate.
Sweeney's contributions to a 62-win season in San Antonio and a 2024 NBA Finals appearance with Dallas could also appeal to veteran teams hoping to make a leap.
There's clearly no guaranteeing that Sweeney will depart this coming summer, nor that he's even interested in taking one of the head coaching positions that could become available. The external threat is real, however, for one of the most important individuals in San Antonio.
Unfortunately, there's nothing San Antonio can do but hope for the best as Sweeney's first head coaching gig appears just over the horizon.
