Spurs better hope the latest Timberwolves trade rumors don't come true

They're already enough of a headache for the Spurs.

It's not a coincidence that all of this information started flowing as soon as the Bucks made it clear that they were listening to offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The league is predictable that way. And while the Spurs won't be in the running for the Greek Freak's services, they should still have their eye on the market, but for another reason.

Monitoring the biggest threats to their success is a part of the gig in a sports organization, and the Timberwolves are worthy of such consideration. They're apparently in the market for a point guard and are interested in acquiring Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu from the Bulls, and that would be a nightmare for San Antonio.

However, there's nothing the Spurs can do to prevent a transaction like that from happening, so the only thing they can do is hope it doesn't materialize. If you don't realize why that would be a problem for the Silver and Black, allow me to explain.

Timberwolves' missing piece is a competent playmaker

This team has pretty much everything you already need to win a title. They're missing a point guard they can rely on. Right now, Anthony Edwards controls most of the offense. That's been effective for them to an extent, but it's not sustainable in the playoffs. It's just too much wear on him to play the number of minutes he does, while defending at a high level and trying to initiate nearly every play.

They made it to the conference finals a couple of years ago when Ant was only in his third season with Mike Conley as their starter. Conley is too old for that role now, and that's why he's been relegated to the bench. They hoped Rob Dillingham could be their playmaker of the future, but he hasn't lived up to their expectations.

However, Coby White is a pure point guard, and a good one at that. He's not going to make any all-star teams, but he can get the job done, and he shoots 37% from outside, making him someone you can't leave open. Adding Donsunmu would be an additional nail in the coffin with the young shooting guard from Chi-Town shooting 45% from three.

Spurs fans remember how difficult it's been to beat this team already. The last thing we need is to see them get the exact kind of pieces they're looking for to propel them to a championship. The runway needs to be as clear as possible for the Silver and Black. An improved Minnesota team would turn a headache into a migraine whenever we play them.

The Spurs still have the second seed in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves have the seventh. That would mean these two ball clubs are meeting in the first round if the season ended today. With the amount of time left and as tight a race as it is, the standings could shift significantly, and we could still end up with that opening matchup.

Could you imagine having to face Ant-Man in a seven-game series for Victor Wembanyama's very first postseason appearance? It would be cinema, but it would be stressful as hell, and I don't know that they could win it if Minny were to add good players like that.
