We're only a day away from the start of the NBA Finals between San Antonio and New York, giving Knicks fans exactly what they asked for. After Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, chants of "We want Wemby" could be heard echoing throughout the streets of the Big Apple. Well, Wemby is here now, and the chances he'll make them regret their boldness are extremely high.

Hilarious fact that they were chanting this after one win against Cleveland aside, the New York faithful don't know what they're asking for. They believe they have the tools to stop or slow down Victor Wembanyama. The New York faithful haven't been shy about expressing that flawed opinion not rooted in any sort of reality.

The Alien averaged the same 25 and 11 against the Knicks in their three matchups this season that he did for the entire 2025-26 campaign. He was also on a minute restriction in their first meeting, having just come back from the calf strain that forced him to miss 12 games. But none of those things trump the most important truth that New Yorkers are about to discover about Wemby.

Wembanyama always gets better during the season

For opponents, Victor Wembanyama is like artificial intelligence. He's an advanced, supercomputing tool invading all of your spaces, no matter how much you say you don't want it. The things that worked to slow him down in October and November are no longer as effective, and many of them make you the vulnerable party now.

Oklahoma City found that out the hard way when they tried to stick Alex Caruso or Jalen Williams with the assignment of guarding the 7'4" tower. It was a method they used in the regular season with varying degrees of success, but in the playoffs, the Spurs just started throwing lobs to their superstar.

The Knicks, like most teams, will pack the paint against Wembanyama and try to take his space away anytime he drives the basketball. But the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year has been shooting 37% from three during the playoffs, too. Whether he's inside the paint or outside, he can hurt you, and he'll find a way to do both.

Portland, Minnesota, and OKC all tried the physicality route. It failed. And while the Timberwolves were successful enough to cause a frustrated Wemby to throw an elbow like MMA legend Jon Jones, he's already learned from that experience. It's unlikely to happen again.

So, the Knicks fans are about to find out two very important things. One is that they shouldn't be looking past the rest of San Antonio's roster. New York will have plenty of trouble dealing with everyone else in Mitch Johnson's rotation. Second, you shouldn't poke the bear. As Jay Z once said, "Do not bark up that tree; that tree will fall on you."
