ESPN'S Shams Charania reports that Anthony Edwards is expected to suit up for the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals on the road against the Spurs. This is very unexpected news, as just two days ago, the young star was listed as "week-to-week" with a possibility to return for Games 3 or 4. However, sports breed unpredictability, and thus, here we are.
Minnesota's Anthony Edwards is expected to play in Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs, barring any setback pregame, per ESPN sources. Just 9 days removed from his left knee injury, and after the team had expected him to return midseries, Edwards has received medical clearance… pic.twitter.com/6o1uxW6qEf

The Spurs will be ready for the Timberwolves no matter what
San Antonio hasn't played basketball in almost a full week. This is one of the best coaching staffs in the NBA—the 62-win record is proof of that. It's highly unlikely that they spent the majority of the time preparing the players for the Timberwolves team without their superstar. They'll have covered all bases, and that's what the guys were already telling media members before the Ant-Man news broke.

Talked w/Devin Vassell & Keldon Johnson about whether they expect Anthony Edwards in tonight's G1

This may be the first go-around for this group of young guys (players and coaches alike), but they weren't born yesterday. It would have been foolish to assume they wouldn't see Edwards, and there's always a possibility for miraculous recoveries when you're talking about professional athletes yet to hit their prime.
This development is exciting, more than anything. Spurs fans would love to beat the Timberwolves at as close to full strength as they can get, and the players feel the same way. Victor Wembanyama is on the record stating how he was hopeful that Minny's star would play, and it looks like he's about to get his wish.

Unfortunately, they still won't be at full strength no matter what they do, since Donte DiVincenzo tore his Achilles in the first round. That's a significant loss for this ball club, but they'll get a jolt if their superhero is ready to go sooner than everyone expected.
Fans hope Edwards isn't taking too much risk
Now, as great as this news is, we also have to be concerned about Ant's long-term health here. You would hope that the medical staff wouldn't allow their franchise star to hit the floor if there were a significant risk he could re-injure himself, but sometimes you can't see around corners.
Edwards was dealing with a soreness in his right knee before suffering the hyperextension and bone bruise to his left one. Rushing back can lead to overcompensation in one part of the body or another and cause entirely new problems. We've seen it happen time after time, but hopefully, it won't happen to one of the most electrifying players in the sport.
The last time these two teams faced off, the Spurs won a one-possession game 126-123. Ant-Man scored a career-high 55 points, and Wemby dropped 39. It wasn't just a game that night; it was an event, and if it's any indication of what we can expect in a series, NBA fans are in for quite a treat.
