Despite their immense youthfulness, the Spurs are in the heat of championship contention. With an average age of 25.2, this is a rare occurrence. In fact, San Antonio would be the second-youngest team in NBA history to win a title and the youngest since 1977.
The 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers hold the crown with an approximate average age of 25.03. More recently, the Oklahoma City Thunder won the 2024-25 championship with an average age of 25.6.
However, what makes the Spurs so special is the youth of their core. On the Portland Trail Blazers team, Bill Walton was 25, and on the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was 26. Meanwhile, the Spurs' best player, Victor Wembanyama, is just 22 years old. By his side, Stephon Castle is 21, and Dylan Harper is 20. Even De'Aaron Fox is still relatively young at only 28. The list goes on.
The Spurs youth has been the engine to their success
This current iteration of the Silver and Black is unlike any previous team in Spurs history. They are driven by excitement, explosiveness, and high-flying plays. They use their youthfulness as a superpower. When other winning San Antonio squads have been slow and methodical, this team has been flamboyant and off-script.
You never know what to expect with this team. On any given possession, you could be getting a SportsCenter top-10 play from anyone. The epitome of this is the Spurs' leader, Victor Wembanyama. His youthfulness makes him mysterious and incredibly intriguing. There's always something new with him.
With their age comes an abundance of speed. Players like De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper can get down the court and to the basket in a blur. With this, opposing defenses have no time to get into their defensive position. The Spurs' speed has made them one of the best transition teams in the NBA.
Lastly, the Spurs' youth has made them one of the most disruptive teams on both offense and defense. Creating chaos, every member of this squad is roaming around and making plays. They have the energy and are expelling it every second they are on the court. It's hard for anyone to keep up.
The Spurs have a great chance at achieving high-caliber feat
While the Spurs won't enter the postseason as title favorites, they are still among the greatest challengers to the reigning champ, the Oklahoma City Thunder. If the regular season is any indication of postseason success, then this team is destined for glory. They have been dominant all season long and have proven to be legit.
This Spurs unit is already in the record books for a multitude of reasons; why not add one more? A championship would be the bow on an amazing gift from San Antonio. What better way to conclude a franchise-altering season than with a championship trophy? It truly doesn't get better than that.
With a title win, the Spurs' 2025-26 season will be remembered forever. They will be engraved into NBA history as the youngest team in the modern era to win a title. As the Oklahoma City Thunder rivalry grows, it would be incredibly sweet to one-up their record. Let's hope that the boys in Silver and Black can get it done.
