Victor Wembanyama understandably garners most of the national attention for the Spurs. The MVP candidate is a prime reason for the team's success and rightfully deserves the respect. However, the key element of San Antonio's rise lies not in the Frenchman but instead in the cast of guards. The trio of ball handlers is legit.
Not only are De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper propelling the Spurs to a historic season, but they have also set up the organization with a foundation that will last for over a decade. You'd better get comfortable with these guys because they will be here for a very long time.
The guards have been instrumental to the Spurs' recent run
Over the past month-plus, the Spurs have been the hottest team in basketball, and the guards have revolutionized their offensive repertoires. When these three are clicking, San Antonio is nearly impossible to slow down, and the results prove it.
Leading the charge, De'Aaron Fox has looked fully deserving of his All-Star status with 19 points and 6.2 assists per game. The veteran is commanding the offense, setting the table, and bringing stability to the team. When the Spurs need to get out of a hole, the Swipa is there to step up.
By his side, Stephon Castle has been extremely impressive as of late. The reigning Rookie of the Year has been stuffing the stat sheet and impacting the game in a variety of ways. Whether he is clamping the opposing team's best player, making plays with his athleticism, or finishing off possessions with authority, the sophomore has been doing it all.
Finally, Keldon Johnson may have some competition for the leading sixth man on the squad. Dylan Harper has really stepped it up as of late and is taking the reins of the secondary unit. Just like his mentors, D. Harp is learning to dictate the offense as the lead ball handler and is now finding more consistency with his shot.
The Spurs are set up for now and the future
The most amazing part about this Spurs trio is that they do not have one franchise cornerstone guard; they have two. San Antonio has the absolute perfect foundation of guards that provide present and future contributions.
In the current day, the Spurs have De'Aaron Fox holding it down. The 2025-26 All-Star has been the Silver and Black's second-best player and will be critical to San Antonio's postseason success. While the veteran holds it down, he is allowing the freedom of development for the younger guards.
Creating the ideal timeline, Fox can hand over the keys to Castle and Harper when his time is up. No matter what, the Spurs will be set up for success at the guard position for a very, very long time. It doesn't get much better than that.
As it stands, the Spurs have perhaps the most complete backcourt rotation in the NBA. Teams like the Thunder, Lakers, and Cavaliers pose strong competition, but when you have three great options at guard, that is hard to beat. This standing as a top-tier backcourt will hold for years to come, no matter what happens across the association.
With this, alongside Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are one of the most complete teams in the NBA and will remain so for the foreseeable future. It's truly astounding how General Manager Brian Wright managed to put this all together, but San Antonio has been relishing the accomplishment this season and will continue to do so for many years to come.
